  • Thoughts are constantly occupying his head. The only relief he gets is when he can laze in the sun. Explains why he likes to do that so much.

  • He's tried many times to replace himself with simple machines, mortal dragons, and natural forces. Nothings worked so far.

  • The most important thing is to give him company. He may ask questions, and I advise you to answer truthfully. He has the most uncanny sense about lies. I hope this predecessors notes have helped you. -Kelp.

Soft grass brushed his legs as he turned his face towards the bright day. Sweet air swirled around him, playfully leading the blades of grass around, accompanied by the rustle of trees. The sun warms his back, spreading its tendrils through his skin as it gently caresses his face. He noticed nothing but the blessed warmth. A slight sigh escapes him, even as his legs lift for another step forward on his endless march.

"So the world turns, beneath small steps, so the heart beats, keeping..." His attention wandered to a sound in the bushes.

"The flow."

"Keeping the flow, so do we adepts, in solemnity go. So the world turns, beneath small steps, so the.."

A green Spiral somersaulted towards him, full of manic energy. "Anatol! We need you!"

"What is it? What's wrong?"

"Caelum lost control of the sky and stained the ground and himself blue!"

Anatol sighed and shook his head. "In other words, the sky is falling?"

Jonie bobbed her head. "Uh, yes! That's probably better... But anyways, how do you get sky out?"

"You're overreacting. This isn't the first time Caelums dropped sky. He knows how to clean it out of the grass." Anatol turned back to Kelp, the Guardian latched onto him as a charge, only to be interrupted again.

"Anatol, we actually do need you. The sky is being clammy today and won't listen to us." This time it was Woodfang, a Mirror with a prosthetic leg. Anatol met his calm gaze before craning around to see the splash mark of navy grass and the Pearlcatcher desperately trying to convince it to go back to the sky.

His whiskers bunched slightly as he stated, "If you all agree that you really need me, I'll come take a look."

They were right. Fog began to sulk into the area around the blue grass. Anatol quickened his pace, pushing mist into the ground as he went. The clouds lazed by overhead, shading first him and then the dragons trailing behind. He gave them a slight shove to keep them out of the missing patch before they started leaking everywhere. They pushed back, spongy and unyielding. His ears flicked with annoyance as he gave them a serious push. When his paws finally reached indigo grass, it pricked into his feet resentfully.

Caelum noticed his approach. "It just won't cooperate today. What'd'ya think is wrong with it?"

"I don't know. The skies aren't happy for whatever reason. You've done a good job here." Anatol poked and prodded at the grass underneath his feet. It swiped back hard, quivering like a reed. His claws came away blued from the sky. He lifted a paw to his mouth and tasted it. No different from usual—a little sweet and wet.

The urge to lie down in the nice, normal grass took him a moment. This system of tugging the celestial bodies around the planet was dumb and contrived; why bother with it at all? He didn't need to be here. So many other worlds didn't need gods to pull suns around. He could leave it all and simply bask in the lovely warmth and let the planet grow cold and die. But for the dragons around him and all the creatures that needed day and night, he could do it. Still, he wanted to bring the pantheon down here and make them see what they had done with their irrevocable, rash decisions.

His mood suddenly soured, and he forced the sky back to its place. The blue squelched out of the grass, leaving not even a drop behind as it rocketed back to its place in the sky. Kelp, ever the astute, recognized his mood and quietly pulled the small company of dragons away from him. All of them offered their goodbyes to his back while he stared at a particular spot on the grass. Briefly, his mind sorted through all the encounters he had met them in. Kelp came from a line of dragons dedicated to 'serving' him. Their words, not his. But his great-great-many-greats-grandmother still looked up at him from the ground, her life trickling away in the full blast of sun. Anatol still wondered why he helped her. Woodfang came when Kelp did. Caelum used to be a researcher at the Oculus. He gave it up on a whim when Anatol passed underneath it. Jonie was new, and unlikely to stay long. The Spiral was somehow diurnal and seemed to never get enough sleep despite it.

He forced his feet to continue the Walk as he thought, the sun beginning to catch up in its slow anger. The sky cleared of clouds, and the sun began to scorch the ground. The plants became stark and limp, with each leaf's veins clearly defined.

He wondered why these dragons could see him. Rightfully, he should be seen by anyone close to death, caught between his home realm and theirs. But only them. Sometimes he missed the days when there was no one who followed him, but he knew it was better when they were around. Without them to occupy his mind, he lagged behind, distracted by some plant or interesting thing, or ran ahead, bored of the current scenery. Or stopped, as he realized he had now.

Maybe he should take a break. Something different for a while. He considered leaving a note for Anamesa and Asteria, but they had met up recently. He knew he should be more like them. Those two were made for this job. They took it in stride, so easily doing the same thing over and over. He had to struggle while they simply walked.

It shouldn't matter to him that the other two were better at it. It shouldn't matter that all he was good for was lugging this giant ball of fire around. He knew he shouldn't blame them for being better at something. No, he was glad they didn't have to feel so futile and helpless.

Take this fern. It grew leaves, all so it could spread its seeds further and grow strong and healthy, but sooner or later bugs, disease, dragons, or animals would come along and take the leaves. It would grow more leaves and then lose them, and then on and on, endlessly, until the plant died. Unlike the plant, he wouldn't die so long as he did this, but the repetition drained him. He never had to be scared of his future because he knew he didn't have one. There was only the Walk, and there would only ever be the Walk.

Without realizing it, the ground beneath him changed to water, and he stepped on waves rather than rocks.

Kelp's familiar voice called out to him. "Are you done sulking yet?" He swam towards Anatol, eventually floating in the water next to him, slowly paddling backwards as Anatol remembered to put one foot in front of another.

"It's rude to tell your boss he's sulking."

"Not if it's true. I had to fly a good deal to get to you. You're really late, y'know. Should've been in Fire ages ago."

Anatol gave him a blank stare. "We've been over this. I'm going to refer to the places I know as the places I know them. Your half-baked descriptions of places don't do them justice. How was I supposed to get that 'swirling place of life, dust, and sparklies' meant Plague?"

"How were you supposed to know, indeed? Yeah." Anatol laughed, suddenly relieved. "How did you know?"

"Hm? Know what? Know you needed someone to talk too? The same way I knew you needed space when you shot that sky up." Kelp laughed, the fins on his face squeezing tight. "I was always taught about what a lonely job you had. It made me sad as a hatchling, to think something so simple was done at someone's expense."

"It's not that bad. I'm sure there are worse fates."

"That's Asteria's talking, not yours. You could do so much more than this." Kelp spoke with such intensity. "I've seen the mark on you. You could escape that tangled rule if you thought hard enough about it. The exact wording is what matters, right? And that the Pantheon can't take it back. You could escape and come live with me. I'll introduce you to my newest hatchling, and I'm sure Maria wouldn't mind using that extra room. You could work at Lanternlea, trading fish or clothes. I'm sure you would pick it up immediately."

"I can't."

"You could."

Anatol shook his head slowly. "No, Kelp. I can't."

The two traveled in silence for a while after. The sun's reflection off the water made everything shine, as even the clouds turned blue with the water's surface. The slow and easy waves rumbled, tossing white foam on the rocky shore. The cries of waterbirds echoed across the gulf. The smell of salt filled the air, sharp and jealous.

"Considering we left you around the Wild Sanctum," Kelp remarked, "You're almost two territories from where you're supposed to be by now. The shrubs back in Nature almost burned up. I made Jonie stay to try to coax some clouds to give up rain for the poor plants."

Anatol smiled, and looked at the water between his feet. It reflected the shining gold of his body back at him, illuminating his face. The sun shone softly behind him, a reflection of what he felt. His heart ached. He couldn't tell why. But why didn't feel so important anymore. There was only the now, a place he could never escape or leave behind. Anatol decided to stay here, where neither the painful past or the dreaded future reached him, and he could enjoy the sun and the company around him.

He decided it again. And again. And again, choosing to stay where he could control his life. And he decided it was good as he walked past the graves of friends, time and time again. The past could only hurt him when he took it with him, so he left it behind, and kept walking.
