They've known the story since their childhood, since they picked Blood Moon out of the twisting nest of writhing snakes and told Father "This one - this one is mine." Always the way: once they have a familiar to anchor them, then they are told. Told - what a tale. We have not always been wise, Slozh's mother had said, claws dancing gently over their head as they played with their new-coiling snake. In the past, we have made mistakes, and that is how we bear this curse. Strange, they'd thought, that their mother was the one to tell them - after all, it was she that was the demon the curse led their father to marry. Can curses go both ways? They didn't know. They didn't think on it again for years. |

"You are old enough yet," Slozh's father had said, and so it was Slozh stood in the entryway, waiting for the delegation to arrive. Their mother is beside them, one hand reassuring on their shoulder. "Do not worry," she says. "My brother searched them for me. A match for you, not a challenge." Her eyes flicker, not the purple she usually keeps them as but the deep blood red that show her true nature. "A curse it may be," she says, looking them in the eye. "But I will not have it weigh on you so. It is only a curse if we let it be." When Slozh's spouse-to-be steps out of the delegation, their grip loosens on Blood Moon's coils. Their mother is a demon, yes, but she would never let them come to harm.

Nayomi
Blood in their heart. Light of their life. Who had expected, when their courtship began, that they would bond so well? And yet... so they have. Nayomi is not like what Slozh was taught to expect of demons, is not brutish or bloodied, vicious or cruel. They're sharp, yes, and know their own mind, but not the fearsome, terrible things they were taught as a hatchling to fear. Rather... they're friendly. Relaxed. Slozh's reprieve from the formality of court. With Nayomi, Slozh can be themself, free of the shackles of precise civility, casual in a way they're rarely allowed. And, to Nayomi, Slozh is a bright being, not as stiff as they'd expected when first they'd met. As it happens, they might just... suit. |
