He is not lying, for sometimes he sees these things, beautiful and cold and far away. Sometimes he dreams of his childhood, of gleaming gold and jewels and innocence. These are the nights he sleeps easy, secure and hopeful, and he can almost pretend he is like any other dragon. These are the nights he longs for. These are the nights he forgets what he has done to himself.

Only Lestia knows the truth, feeling him twitch and cry out in his sleep. Her presence helps, but he still dreams of the night it happened. He remembers the searing, burning, inescapable pain of it, the primal scream that issued forth from him. Sometimes he stands apart from events, watching himself, passing judgement on the naive young dragon that reached out to touch something wonderful. Sometimes he feels it, every nerve on fire, spreading his very consciousness across the universe, seeing it created and destroyed in an endless cycle.
