kylas was the sixty-fifth recruit for SILT 'N ICHOR. until the volcano tetrahedron shifted in its sleep and ruptured the camp, swallowed it in a hungry maw of magma before rolling back over and falling into deeper slumber once more. he was there. he saw it all.everyone he had ever known, dead. gone.
he saw the emergence of the chimes in tetrahedron's wake
now he hangs around the volcano still, scuttling from crag to crag, nervous and twitching at every twitch of the earth. he avoids the contractors, who let him be, but will point out where they went when dragons come looking. silt 'n ichor taught him how to judge a dragon's character through brief observation, so he knows which travelers are safe to approach and talk to, and which he should avoid
he still paints his scales. he makes the paints, actually, gathers flowers and roots and fruits and clay that makes for good pigment, and derives muddy yellows, brusque reds, and occasionally, vivid greens. contractors use it, travelers use it, and when he's desperate he'll visit smokesnort to peddle his wares in order to purchase supplies

The Chimes were long-ago trapped beneath Tetrahedron, locked away for committing atrocities, refusing to submit, or posing a danger to the residents of the Ashfall Waste. But Independent's presence here in the physical meat world of Sornieth, it changes that meat, that crystal, those neatly ordered atoms. First, just manifestations of small, individual tetrahedrons jutting out of the earth and stone of the dormant volcano. Unbeknownst to anyone, beneath the cracked and hissing surface of this volatile land, the volcano underwent the same shapeshift, on a much larger, holistic scale. NOW, Tetrahedron is as its name proclaims, a great black polyhedron upthrust from the magma. That alteration cracked the volcano's foundations, loosed the old enchantments, and set the Chimes free to secure their bygone claims once again.
