B I O G R A P H Y

Zafre was unlike his many older siblings in that his mother wanted him. Certainly, her previous hatchlings had been her choice to have, but every one had been incubated in hopes of hatching like Zafre. When he broke the shell of his egg and looked out into the world for the first time, Lyla cried out in joy. Her trials were over, the scion had at last been born.

Those pupil-less golden eyes, arrayed with octogonal facets were an indicator of legendary magical potential. So Zafre was singled out from day one, sequestered away from his nestmates, who were quickly sold off for their beautiful scales. He grew up wanting for nothing, doted on by mother and father, his every whim catered to and his interests encouraged. His talent for magic was most prized by his mother, and Zafre was provided with all the knowledge and tools needed to develop it as much as possible. This was the only activity he had no choice but to participate in. Lyla was growing tired of maintaining the many spells over her kingdom, the large-scale magic a challenge even for her after so long. Her heir had to be much, much stronger than she had ever been, to guarantee their continued hold over the lands and dragons they owned.

However, as he matured Zafre began to grow disillusioned with his mother’s vision of his life. What right had she to decide what he could and couldn’t do, when he was already better than her at everything? In her years of focusing all attention on her son, Lyla had let her grip on Lyle’s mind loosen, and so he had been able to provide counsel to his son. Lyle encouraged Zafre to follow his own will, as he had with the many ill-fated hatchlings before. But Zafre was not like his father: where Lyle was gentle and compassionate, Zafre was cruel and conniving. He would not let his mother get away with treating him like some magical reactor to support her regime. He would make sure she suffered for every moment she spent enforcing her will on Zafre. He would escape her, and Lyla would never recover.

____The end of the Starborn Prophets came suddenly, before Zafre was even hatched. An outbreak of illness trapped the progenitors, robbing them even of an honorable end. The documents recording their descendants were lost, and so the remaining children of that family were left with only the intangible bonds of blood and magic between them.

____Zafre sought out the remaining Prophets not long after leaving his mother’s castle. While he was determined to stand on his own, he had also resolved to seek further sources of power. However when he arrived at the old keep, there were only dusty notices of the quarantine on the empty building, and only bones within. What records had survived were mainly mundane, but Zafre saved a few scrolls of magic for himself, and so was able to learn a little of the way of the Prophet even with no one left to teach it.
