Biography
The story begins this way: he is hungry.
What does a hungry dragon do? He fights and scavenges for food to consume.
He lives peacefully as a warrior. As peaceful as a warrior can be, at least. He does what he wants, and the clan near him leaves him alone, which- which he’s perfectly content with. They don’t take his food, and he’ll leave them alone.
He doesn’t bother to learn their names. They’re not going to be here for long, and he’s going to stay here. For eternity. He sees a few familiar faces every time; the one with the mask, and the one with the frilled collar. They treat him with respect and dignity. He doesn’t respond to any of that. He doesn’t need it.
Then- she walks into his life.
More accurately, she follows him around until he deems her a dragon that isn’t too much of a nuisance. He finds her chattering inane, and usually fights enemies on his own while she flutters by his side. (Protecting another dragon is a novelty. He’s never protected someone else before.) The point is, he doesn’t…hate her presence.
Slowly, he hunts for two. And two becomes a clan’s worth of food, and she becomes the first dragon to ever be important to him. And suddenly, he knows her name, Thana, and he finds himself responding sometimes. He’s not a part of the clan, but he’s a common visitor, and most dragons greet him with a cheery, “Hey Fenghuang!” every time he walks into the clan. Thana beams bright at his side.

Thana’s ill - she tells him one day while they’re on a trip hunting for food. He thinks, it explains her weak constitution. It explains how the whole clan can hunt for themselves, while she can’t. (He makes an extra effort to bring back her favourite food after this; sweet watermelons that he personally couldn’t bear the taste of. He’s rewarded with a gigantic smile.)
Thana survives by foraging for plants. (She can’t hunt.)
(Dragons get hungry.)
(Fenghuang was named for the green fire that lit up around his wings when he was first born. Born from fire and risen from ashes. The Phoenix King. Undying. Immortal.)
A drought hits the clan. He wonders how this is possible, since they’re a Water clan, but most dragons aren’t affected. They can simply dive into the sea for sustenance, after all. It’s the land-dwellers that can’t deal with it, and their clan is Waterborn.
Thana comes with him less often now; he dives into the ocean to find food for himself and the clan.
(“I can’t swim, no, that’s a common misconception! I usually hunt on land, since the clan is a landbound town, afterall! And soggy food makes me sick - sicker than usual, at least.”)
Should he- should he even be surprised at this point?
But he feels the loss just as keenly, and his world falls and shatters into a million pieces just the same. He can barely hear the murmured condolences of the clan. He can barely see Thana’s mate sob and cry. All he can see is-
Thana, Thana, Thana.
His knees scrape the floor. He- he stays. For how long? He’s not sure. But it’s dark when he finally cries tears of emerald fire.
It’s dark when Fenghuang closes his eyes.
And it’s dark when Thana opens hers.
