rageous has never been the favorite child. not of his parents, and certainly not of fate.

rageous was not the youngest of his siblings. wasn't the oldest, either. was not the prettiest, nor the smartest, or the most talented. he was unremarkable.

normal. ordinary, even, though he has always hated that word.

so basic, a cry far enough from the usual for his kind that being so average was almost the most abnormal thing about him.

he never sticks out from a crowd; never obvious, never ostentatious, always fading into the background with the rest of the pointless clutter.

it makes him want to crawl out of his skin. to shed his flesh, pull it away, and leave only the rawest form of him in its place. him, with his split mind and meek, small heart.

to change, morph, it would be the highest blessing the virulent mother could give to him. after all, her children were meant to adapt, so why not him?

when the time came for him to leave home alongside his clutchmates, he watched most of them file off into the raucous, ever-shifting marketplace- painters and mercenaries, artisans for hire by whatever clan would take them.
