Coming from a line of Seekers, Aretha was raised in the same military mindset as the Gaolers before her. Growing to be a large and cunning dragon, Aretha thrived in the rigid lifestyle, but knew deep down that she would never be accepted by the Gaolers of the Southern Icefield, opting to become a Seeker.

Life as a Seeker, Aretha found, was quite lonely. Wandering all over Sornieth, coming across little evidence of any sort of Shade activity, she desired entertainment. And so, she began to sing. First ancient melodies of the Gaolers, then folk songs of her Earthern childhood home, then songs from any area she found herself passing through. Through this, Aretha found a passion for music in all forms, not just lyrical song. She began collecting instruments of all sorts, garnering all sorts of odd looks from any dragon who knew of the Gaoler reputation. From this passion, Aretha also found that music could be used as a weapon.

On a patrol through the Shattered Plains, Aretha began to pick up on a scent. An oily, acrid scent, so foul that she could taste it. And so, she followed, for this was the scent of her childhood trainings. This was the scent of Shade. She followed the scent for nearly a week, before reaching a small, but lively, campsite. Her hackles raised as the smell grew oh so unbearable, yet lowered as she was greeted by a creature smelling of incense and sunshine. The creature shimmered, solidifying into the visage of a Skydancer. She snarled, but quieted as the dragon angel addressed her, asking if she was here for the Shade-Touched.

Following the angel wordlessly, Aretha was shown the cavern in which the awful, pitiful, creature was contained. Debating on what she should do, Aretha stayed in Cswg for the next few days, mulling over if she should report the creature to the other Gaolers, or even go as far as to attempt transporting it.

In the end, Aretha decided that while she would let other Gaolers know of this instance, she would not attempt transport, as the angel, Galalim, seemed to have everything under control. She did worry, though, and so decided that she would stay in Cswg, to aid Galalim in his preservation of this Shade fragment.

An imposing figure, Aretha stands guard at a cairn, the entrance to the prison of the Shade fragment. As she guards, she sings, a song laced with magic, to ensure the sedation of the prisoner. She, Granite, and Galalim switch on and off, and the three of them have become incredibly close as a result. When not on duty, Aretha enjoys her position as one of the primary hunters of Cswg, and can often be found at the town's hearth, strumming her lute.
