Delta hatched in the nursery here, the grandchild of one of the clan's founding pairs (Abriana and Grain). She and her brother were the first of their grandchildren, and they found themselves to be a keystone of the clan's legacy.

However, the typical roles didn't appeal to Delta. She didn't enjoy fighting in the coliseum, or sorting through the clan's hoard. She liked hunting and gathering fine, but it wasn't her passion, and while she wasn't opposed to taking a mate, no one in the clan caught her eye. Beginning to give up hope and afraid of disappointing her parents, grandparents, and clan, she crept back to the nursery to hide.

There, she found Butler, matriarch of the clan. All older dragons took a turn at minding the hatchlings, and Butler, for all her responsibilities, took hers just the same. Butler welcomed her in, and asked what had brought her here. Reluctant to admit her insecurities, especially to the matriarch, Delta hesitated.

Sensing her discomfort and anxiety, Butler instead began to tell her about when she first became matriarch. She'd been anxious, unsure, and even afraid, but eventually she found her place. As she listened to the story, Delta found herself calming. If even the noble and fair matriarch could be unsure of her place, then perhaps it wasn't so bad for Delta to be anxious, too.

A few times, during the story, the hatchlings interrupted. They would roll in between them while wrestling, or run over with a question or concern. Almost without thinking, Delta handled each interruption, rolling playful hatchlings away, softly answering a question, and soothing scratched claws or sore scales. She thought nothing of it, but Butler was watching closely.

At the end of her story, Butler paused to pretend to think. "You know, Delta." She began "These hatchlings are quite a handful. I could really use your help watching them." Delta was surprised and delighted. For the rest of the week, she helped whoever was on nursery duty. Each day, Butler would stop by to chat quietly with the other dragon. Finally, at the end of the week, Butler asked Delta to take a walk with her.

Butler asked if she enjoyed working in the nursery, and Delta responded that she did. Then, Butler told her that this week had been a test of sorts. She'd asked each of the dragons working with her what they thought of how Delta handled the hatchlings. They'd all given glowing reports. If she wanted, Delta could become the permanent nursery watcher.

Well, Delta's still in the nursery, so you can guess what she answered.
