Her Story
A’Jala had always wanted to travel the world when she was younger, her absent mother’s wanderlust flowing through her veins. Though she never knew her mother, her father and the rest of the clan were more than enough family.The clan were nomads, but according to her father - N’hal - her mother’s clan traveled daily, never staying in a single place for very long. She had chaffed under the seeming snail’s pace of Clan Thorn, and as soon as A’Jala was hatched… she left N’hal to raise the child by himself. A’Jala couldn’t blame her mother, for it seemed as though she, too, had the need to move in her blood as well… Clan Swift Wind's wanderlust had claimed another - though A’Jala would not abandon her father and his clan who were like family. When she was old enough to travel on her own, she did so - always coming back to the caravan of Clan Thorn. It wasn’t until she was travelling through a more primitive land that she saw tattoo artists for the first time, dipping ink onto needles and piercing dragonhide. She learned the traditional way - apprenticing under a master native to the area. It was difficult work, poking the needle through the skin over and over and keeping lines consistent. Harumi was endlessly patient, the tiny Fae guiding her pupil with boar skin over and over again, gaining her multiple callouses and a slow building confidence. When Harumi let her take on clients, A’Jala glowed under the client's love of the result... and Harumi's quiet pride. When a Mirror came by, covered in tattoos of immaculate detail all over his scales, telling his friend he’d come to get a tattoo done ‘traditionally’... A’Jala asked him what he meant. The idea of using machines to get consistent pressure from the needle and ink made up her mind. She thanked her mentor, Harumi - and with the Fae's blessing - set out to find one of these machines. |

A’Jala has contracts with the Great Harpy Flock for their exquisite pigments for her tattoos. Her main contact and banter-friend is Nephiris - a purple and blue harpy woman. Harumi was the one to introduce the two of them - having a long time relationship with Nephiris' matriarch, Vynea. The eldest in the family, Vynea takes pride in being mother to triplet male harpies -Olloe, Airyre, and Yorase- though Airyre later realised they were a woman, all three have brought Vynea many grandchildren... including Nephiris. Nephiris' moms are wary of her interacting with dragons unattended, but Nephiris will not be dissuaded - claiming it's one of the best ways to get new items for their family is to trade with dragons (and A’Jala herself!) so Vynea overrides her children and allows her to continue trading with dragons known to the matriarch. |
