“You are dying.” It was not a question, more of a cruel observation. The fae did not look mournful, though that was probably expected. She let out a quiet snort of admission, staring towards the dirt cliffs and the waters below. He watched her gaze, shaking off a cloak before taking a speedy leap into the water. Arcade winced a bit, alone again with a cruel silence. The cloak left behind seemed lovingly made, patched holes and mismatched buttons made of wood and bone. It was charming in a way. A wet plop pulled her out of her study, the fae had resurfaced now holding a large feisty fish in its sharp jaws. She stared at the thing as it was dropped at her feet, twisting and snapping before it was mercifully killed. Her hunger took over, the whole fish gone by the time she thought to question the gift.
The fae was still near, pulling up a few more angry fish before leaping out and packing them neatly into a net bag.
“Thank you.” He paused, fins flicking.
“Ah. Yes, of course. I mean- you are welcome.” Hm. Looking closely he seemed more clumsy than cruel, voice cracking in a way that signified light use. He did not question it when she followed him up the canyon, eyes now sharp as she looked over the palid grey walls. He squeezed into the cave, shifting and presumably dropping his catch before reemerging with a struggle to scan the skies.
“I can fix your entrance if you’d like.” the words came out before she could think better, its gaze snapping to study her before he nodded and stepped aside.
“... If you’d like there's a larger cave a few paces down. There’s an underground river that connects them I haven’t gotten into.” It wasn’t quite an invitation, but it was taken.
Belldrop wasn’t easy to read. It was a pretty common occurrence for faes, but it made being his clanmate… difficult. Arcade would often break from digging to a pair of bright blue eyes watching over. Not facing outward towards danger, but inward, as though the noise was some nuisance. When asked his head would tilt and it would only say
“Ah. My apologies. Please, continue.” He didn’t turn his gaze from her for a long while, eventually digging deep into the moss to avoid the scratch scratch scratching of her claws on the rough clay. He never brought up the fact that she only dug at night, nor did he raise a hand to stop her at any point. His son never seemed to mind, often digging through whatever piles she left behind for delicious worms and strange beasts, often luring them out of the cave with scraps and treats to see if they would enjoy some accompaniment.
Despite their oddities the little family was easy to slip into, what was likely only a week felt like ages as their caves grew larger and more connected. A sloping cave here, a storage cave there. It was quite pleasant, if not small, before that strange cave in.
