Under a broken Sky, all that glimmers is laid bare...
RoyRoy, Shadow servant of Ekali, The Joy the Body Lacks

The Tale
Existence has been short and busy ever since RoyRoy was summoned from the earth's clutches. Not a dragon and not even alive, the little aberration-looking shadow found himself conscious within the shadow of a sleeping black guardian, little red eyes peering out from the puddle of darkness on the floor.

Five red eyes, still mixing with the shadow and swirling over on themselves, and the emerging shape of a snout in view. His own snout. His new snout? Without memory or information of any kind, the process was quite confusing. That thought crossed his mind, the questions of who am I? What am I? Where am I? But he didn't hear them once. Like an echo, a second mind asked the same things- and both cut themselves off in the surprise. A tentative push from one head calling Hello? reached the other's Hello! as the heads emerged in full. Not just one mind, one body yes but two consciousnesses! The body tumbling forth was forgotten as the two began to chatter in their minds.

Controlling all those legs... the tails, the wings- the little shadow didn't even know where to begin. Both the minds could try, so perhaps share half and half? Well no, then you have to speak each step to stay in line, how about we just fly? Two wings can't be that hard? Hey, what's all this pointy gray stuff on these string-things? And why are we falling towards it?

Yep- a gangly little shadow, trying to fly and diving headfirst into one of the bramble patches of the Eternal Grove. Good start? No. But at least their yowls meant they had a voice! And also attracted a much, much larger dragon by the name of Serene; in her silent grove and master's resting place, nothing should have been able to live for long. Let alone something that could produce such a loud sound.

The heads now, knowing they could speak outside of the mind, were yapping at each other about who was in the wrong- until the coatl dragon loomed over their tangled mess of inky limbs, and set them down from the vines as they stared at the massive beast. Some interrogation later, Serene was confident this strange non-draconic being wasn't a threat; and also, didn't know where he came from. But she could strike a deal with him, as he was hesitant to have to cower under more of her kind and she knew the Subterrainian clan would tear him to pieces.

He could live in the grove if he helped tend to the plants upholding Ekali's life, as Serene was charged to do. He wouldn't be allowed to leave, and otherwise was free to do as he wished. Given that he might have even been spawned from Ekali's mere presence, the quarreling heads had to agree! Also, could he ask about what this stuff was, these tangley things and his legs and the stone and- please? Please?

Over time in the grove, the shadow creature learned who he was; not what he was, but picked a name and learned his own skills. Both heads always fought- First over the name idea of Roy, both refusing to choose something else. Then about who was first to exist in the shadow, who was the original... Then about movement (a lot) and job duties (a lot) he never stopped snapping at himself. But within the tending to plants, the questions and answers, and infinite curiosity, he discovered two gifts of his. The abilities of a shadow, and mimicry.

The shadow stuff was easy- he wasn't made of flesh and blood like a dragon, even though he looked like one. The thorn vines and plant life was only a hinderance for so long before RoyRoy realized, with concentration, he could phase right through solid objects- including the stone of the cavern walls and floor! Luckily, flight still works while inside stone, so he did not fall for too long after trying to set his feet down. Just around an hour of panic... This ability makes him impossible to contain, which Serene dreads will someday become an issue.

Neither Roy can agree who was able to do their second ability first, and will never stand down to admit defeat. Serene got the lovely pleasure of being the one to first hear her own voice echoing back at her from the maze of vines and leafless trees, giggling with her signature huffs and taunting her from throughout the cave. Scratches and cave noises could also be produced, down to the drip, drip, drip of water from the ceiling and distant skittering of cave spiders oh so far away. Of course, given the mischievous attitude of a hatchling, this is used to mercilessly prank and trick anyone in hearing distance.

The Subterrainian
RoyRoy has heard of them through Serene, a clan of dragons that are never to know about the grove and Ekali. In his opinion, more drakes to play or toy with could be fun! He wishes it was possible to actually see them; but given his state as a creature and not a dragon, they'd be a danger to his life. It hasn't stopped him from floating through walls to follow stray members of the clan and scare them with his mimicry though.

The Fractallians
He doesn't know they exist. If he did, his feelings would be the same as for the Subterrainians.
