Biography
|
AKHERON was the god of the underworld river and lake of pain. The daimon Charon ferried the souls of the dead across its dark waters in his skiff.
— theoi.com According to the Greeks, there are five rivers which flow through Haides, the Underworld. The five rivers are Styx, Lethe, Acheron, Phlegethon, and Cocytus. Acheron is the river of pain, and contains the suffering of moral souls. Our Acheron is a kind soul too burdened; his own compassion has been his undoing. A quiet and calm dragon, Acheron has been the logical first choice when hurting dragons need a shoulder (or four) to cry on. He has no desire to turn away a friend, and so Acheron has become a vessel for the suffering of everyone around him. His own feelings are rarely expressed, and his needs often go unmet because he is too tired and reluctant to ask. Despite the crushing weight on his shoulders, it is not likely that Acheron will change unless someone intervenes. Alcaeus, Fragment 38A (trans. Campbell, Vol. Greek Lyric IV) (Greek lyric C6th B.C.) : "Do you suppose that when you have crossed the great river of eddying Akheron (Acheron) you will see again the sun's pure light? Come, do not aim at great things : why, king Sisyphos (Sisyphus), son of Aiolos (Aeolus), wises of men, supposed that he was master of Thanatos (Thanatus, Death); but despite his cunning he crossed eddying Akheron twice at at fate's command." |
