onyx hails from a defective egg that was sacrificed to the shadowbinder and dropped into a pool of sludge to rot. having taken pity on the child, the shadowbinder resurrected the egg and blessed her, leaving as onyx hatched. onyx became the progenitor of a clan, but she usually leaves the more direct work to other dragons she believes worthy of leading the clan in her place.

her clan is a haven for nocturnes who have forgotten who they are - or never knew in the first place. while she is reluctant to show herself to anyone, she works hard to please the shadowbinder by taking care of her children; the nocturnes.
