Biography
[???] ran their talons across the elaborate machine in the center of their makeshift lab, their lanky body snaking protectively around it. Twin arches jutted up from the ground like a ribcage, reaching up towards the heavens. Heavy black cords, engraved with various runes, spread out from the structure like the radial lines of a spider web, disappearing into the black depths of the caves in which their lab–if it could even be called that–was hidden. They pulsed with forbidden magic, secrets they coaxed out of the plague necromancers with coin and lightning and teeth. To an outside observer, this machine would appear to have no obvious purpose save for something ominous. But to them, it was for something grand. A portal, an entryway, both a knife and a gate…
The Gatekeeper…
Naomi was known by many names, her story having been distorted and twisted and corroded by layers upon layers of myth, ensnaring what was real and trapping it within fiction. But in this name they knew was truth, for their great grandmother held dominion over the veil that separates the living and the dead. They had seen that power themself.
As a young hatchling, [???] had poor control of their electrical abilities. They were an anomaly, not only born without the abilities other Naomi descendents had, but extremely weak and runty as well. Desperate to prove themself, they attempted to conjure a large lightning strike only for the surge to stop their tiny frail heart. They could feel their chest tightening, their vision fading, the panic and fear that burned within them even as their frayed neurons sparked and died.
And then her.
They were standing behind two arches, not unlike the machine, with Naomi floating above them. Her soft pink eyes gazed at them with pity.
“Your time has not yet come, little one,” she whispered. She gently flew down to them and grasped their small talons. Slowly, she led them through the Gate, back to the world of the living.
Tonight, they will make that journey once more.
And hopefully, they thought as they attached the electrodes to their chest, not for the last time.
