An experienced Seeker from the Fortress of Ends. Mikhail is the more serious of Andrei's two guards, and almost never leaves his side. Anyone who wishes to speak with Andrei either does it with Mikhail there, or not at all. Being born into the Seeker order, Mikhail is more familiar with the outside world than his charge. He has been capturing Shade since he was barely more than a hatchling, but not without it scarring him both outside and in. During his early years hunting, he had a partner whom he was extremely close with. Close enough, in fact, that they considered getting married. But before they could decide, Mikhail's partner was slain in battle when a horrorbeast escaped one of the deep cells. This plunged Mikhail into despair, and he was taken off active duty for taking unnecessary risks. After years of letting his grief slowly seep out of him, Mikhail was chosen alongside Sevastian to accompany Andrei in his mission to retrieve a Shade fragment from the Shifting Expanse. Mikhail told himself he wasn't going to get attached to his companions. They all worked dangerous jobs, and he wasn't going to let his heart be broken again. This plan fell apart quickly upon getting to know the two. As his charge, Mikhail had sworn to protect Andrei, but found that urge went beyond simple duty. As for Sev, the rookie Seeker's (somewhat naive) determination and soft personality meant Mikhail also found himself wanting to protect him. While Andrei delays their return to the Fortress, Mikhail has time to come to terms with his feelings and act on them. |
