Degrassé
adj. entranced and unsettled by the vastness of the universe, experienced in a jolt of recognition that the night sky is not just a wallpaper but a deeply foreign ocean whose currents are steadily carrying off all other castaways, who share our predicament but are already well out of earshot—worlds and stars who would’ve been lost entirely except for the scrap of light they were able to fling out into the dark, a message in a bottle that’s only just now washing up in the Earth’s atmosphere, an invitation to a party that already ended a million years ago.

Where there is magic, there is a need for a source.

Underneath the main caverns of the Sanctuary, there lies something much older than any in the clan. Something built by someone unknown.

Echoes remain, ripples of lives and passion and love and horror.

A mural depicting a lost love. A falsidical recollection of the origin of the world. Tools, embedded in stone. Bones littering empty, cobwebbed caverns.

And carnivorous labyrinth.

It is Olēka who leads the exaltees to the underground with whispered ideas of grandeur and glory. He takes them to the spirit, to the labyrinth, into its open maw.

And at the entrance, an ancient, vigilant statue. They have named it Degrassé, for lack of anything else. The years can be marked by the graceful saltations etched into the jade by the wind itself. It stands, a guardian and a gatekeeper, a savior and a condemner to the souls that would pass into the labyrinth.

The afterglow of the lit subterrane begins to fade as the labyrinth deepens, and the first stirrings of fear set in for any who walk along Degrassé. The somber, restless spirit never speaks, not to the exaltees, and never looks them in the eyes.

They march down twists and turns.

The walls seem to move.

There is always, always, a gentle wind. Some claim to hear voices in it, mocking them.

No light.

No sound but the half-imagined mutterings.

Some run, darting from the spirit's side. For some, in such an alien world, the presence of a being, even one as Degrassé is enough reason to stay.

Either way, the results are the same.

Degrassé will eventually vanish, and with them, the now comforting voices and breeze.

The Sanctuary becomes more powerful.

There will be another soul lost deep within the passages of the earth.
