Runes are the first sign of a great magician; from the moment she appeared from the cracked shell of her egg, decorated with runic inscriptions from head to tail, her destiny was clear.

As she grew, she quickly cultivated her skills under the watchful eyes of her senior magicians and the outside world saw her fulfil her assigned future with impressive speed. But was this simply innate ability as everyone assumed? The runes on her body which had been a promise of such glory had failed to mention the difficulties, the isolation, the punishments. Runes merely proclaimed latent potential, no one said you didn’t have to work hard to reach the top of the world. But some days it didn’t just seem like she’d have to work hard, some days it seemed like she’d have to sell her soul. Late nights and early mornings began to blur into one never-ending day, spent practising never-ending spells. The minutest difference in the flick of her wrist or in the tone of her mumblings would result in drastic consequences. To endure physical and psychological lashings became an established part of her routine. The question of her worth echoed through the library of her mind.

And yet, she kept at it day in day out. To others, everything appeared to come easy to her; she was the wunderkind, blessed by the gods. The harsh reality was that she was a string pulled taut and her biggest fear was when she would snap.
