Wintermane

Pure white fur dazzled in the snow, Wintermane should know cause that’s all he ever did, stalking up on his prey before getting ready to pounce, just a sparkle of glitter before his prey’s oncoming death. Wintermane didn't get his name for standing out, now did he? No, he blended in like the snow, and before long he graduated, top of his hunting class. No other bright dragon could hinder his performance of agile strength and winter beauty. His mom had always said that the unexpected happened, and wouldn't be nice to some. Now Wintermane knows that she had been talking about him.

The newly shed snow stuck to Wintermane’s like lines of tape. He shook his fur, revealing a spotted undercoat underneath. His last hunt was tonight, unbeknownst to him, his last thrill of life to be ended before it even began. The full moon reflected deep in his eyes as he watched for any movement against the pure white field. He huffed a breath as a hare hopped out of a bush and with a great leap and wish of luck he lunged forward and grabbed it between his sharp teeth. It struggled before giving up, the hare’s blood dripping down Wintermane’s muzzle before he turned around and began the long trek back to his family.

There was no way he could've seen it coming. At least it was fast and he didn’t hurt. The waking moments might have been disturbing, but at least he’s in a better place now, right?

You watch the snow, as it falls over the hills
Soft pink eyes stare out
Missing the feeling of the cold between your claws
The smell of winter, in the air.

You think you hide it well
The tears in your eyes, the lump in your throat
But it's given away so easily
Because you always go out here, on snowy days like this.

You watch for Hares, and Squirrels, and Mice
Remembering the days where you'd sit in the bush
The feeling of their warmth, in your jaws.
And the feeling of warmth, in your body, before that last hunt.

You sit at the edge, hoping for those feelings once more
Hoping for something more
But the life has left your eyes
And your body back home, is cold.
