DRONE

Dragonlike creatures with black chitin in place of scales, who move as though possessed. Drones are not sentient, they are not sapient, and they can barely be considered alive. They are disposable workers, who serve under the control of a rogue consciousness that treats them less like living beings and more like extensions of its own body. A consciousness is the brain, and its drones are the muscle, the sinew, the churning innards.

CLAN'S NOTES: Acquired on its hatchdate by the Howlisle Light Clan, and detached from its consciousness by the Clan's mage.

The layer of opalescent chitin on its wings was too heavy upon hatching for it to balance effectively while running, likely the reason for its expulsion from its Hive. Since this is an issue hatchling dragons typically grow out of, the Clan's intent was to raise the drone as normally as possible, although its awareness remains questionable.

The drone responds only to "Drone" and, thanks to its companion, "Dear". It has never spoken or responded to elaborate directions, and will not eat or drink unless commanded. Still, it appears to recognize familiar denmates, notably acting more curious and lively when a known dragon is present.

When it believes itself unobserved, it is prone to rhythmic chirruping and jaw clacking. This is believed to be self-soothing behavior as a result of instinctive distress at its detachment from its consciousness. It was assigned a familiar to alleviate some of this.
