T he assassin had expected issues in this plan- after all, with a corrupt lair attempting to encroach upon their land, masses of mercenaries securing the territory were inevitable, and the fact that they were given powerful weapons even more so- but this was something that no lone dragon could possibly anticipate. Stalactites coated with Serthis toxin, and mechanisms that would cause arrows to fly towards any unfortunate soul finding themselves within; at the entrance as well, where anybody at all could walk inside and lose their lives due to the traps laid around.

Did the ruler- no, dictator was the better term for whoever controlled the land- care at all for the safety of their dragons? Perhaps this explained why Layek's employer was a mere merchant, a particularly meek Fae who had sought him out and handed him a massive pile of treasures; had she someone who was wrongfully brought down by such underhanded tactics? His reputation may have been that of a calm, calculated assassin, but this did cause a tangled mess of emotions to bubble beneath the masked exterior. Anyone attempting to enter or leave without knowing of the dangers lying within would be unable to do anything except turn around and return.

In no way was it quiet, but he eventually came up with a plan to trudge through the hallway. Crouching down to avoid the spiked ceiling, Layek crawled forward, flapping his wings in an attempt to create a current of wind that would divert the arrows from his chest. This was where his training was vital to the job, and his natural nerves of reinforced steel would have to remain sturdy against the pressure of a perfect kill. Particularly stubborn arrows pierced his scales several times, but besides a roll of the eyes- obscured by his hood for the most part, though vision was still possible- he refused to show any weakness towards these abhorrent nuisances. The figurative light at the end of the tunnel was soon approaching, with the gilded, crystalline pillars visible from far away thanks to the light refracted by them. They were perfect prisms, after all, separating the energy into several colors. In any other situation, he may have called it beautiful.

Layek, however, was here to take everything away from those who unlawfully gained it.

His own occupation may not have been looked upon positively, though it was a necessary evil, in his eyes. Sparing a thorough glance around the hallways, he found them absolutely crawling with vermin, as though none of them were in a condition to traverse without the risk of disease or injury...and, the more he reflected on the area, the more he believed it to be correct. Was a single dragon, with as much wealth as one could possibly acquire, hiring others to work for them and living in luxury as others in the area suffered from terrible diseases with few cures? it was a curious situation, but focus was quickly regained as he stepped inside the room.

Truthfully, room was a generous term; it was more akin to a gilded cage of sorts, with a small, shimmering Wildclaw glaring at a slightly larger Coatl. The latter was dressed in jewelry and adorned with pieces that seemed oddly similar to ruins he'd seen before, while the former dressed in a sage's attire, sparing a glance to the assassin. Layak nodded and began to pace around the room, relying on the girl distracting the monarch as he began to monologue about...wait, what?

"Keita, you are my only child who has been destined for greatness! You'll inherit my fortune, my guards, and my desires! Why do you still refuse to obey me, even when I have given you so much...?" As this 'Keita' moved forwards, causing the corrupted king to move closer to the assassin lurking in the shimmering silks plastered across the walls, she began to craft her own retort out of spite alone, it seemed. Perhaps she would have done for her own desires what Layak was paid to do.

"I am of royal blood, I understand that. No, really, I do. You're the one who constantly tells me that and pushes me to be this ruthless, killer queen that you believe me to be. For a while, I didn't think that it was true, but now, you've showed me that you're right."

Before he could question the cryptic words, the rogue had already pinned him to the stone floor, placing a claw upon his neck and dragging it downwards, piercing through skin and flesh alike. Crimson stained silver and grey arms, and the off-pitch screaming was soon drowned out with the bubbling of liquid. Layak began to step away from the evidence, before Keita spoke up, shoving a stray pile of gold out of her way.

"...Thank you. I would have done it myself, but I wasn't allowed to train." She was tiny compared to him, but that was just fine, he thought; if she wished to become an assassin, or at least, defend herself, he could certainly teach her just what she needed to know. Tapping a claw to his mask, he nodded, before tilting his head towards the exit. Seeing as the princess knew how to disarm the traps, and was much more lithe than he, they made it out in record time. When the mercenaries stationed outside noticed the princess without her father, they immediately realized what had happened, but one Ridgeback walked up to the duo, glancing at Layak before leaning down to speak.

"Where are you going? Doesn't your father want you to stay inside so you don't start becoming one of us, or something?" Keita laughed, leaning in closer as the assassin began to walk off. She knew how to run, so he had no reason to wait up. Besides, notifying his employer of success was necessary at this point.

"Oh, Father's dead, sir. I still reign over this territory, but you're free to leave. I have better plans, now...oi, where'd he go..." With a wave and a quiet 'goodbye', she ran to join her new companion, as the mercenaries planned to raid the lair of treasure. After all, where she was headed, she likely wasn't going to last long, anyway...was she? Who knew?

As they approached the merchant stand, the Fae perked up, twitching the frills on her head and hopping off to observe them. She finally settled upon Keita's head, twitching her frills as she attempted to express something. Happiness? Contentment? Neither of them were accustomed to Fae, so they opted to listen and wait it out.

Eventually, she began to speak, as monotone as ever. "Thank you. You've completed the job with stunning grace, Layak. You even retrieved the princess from the place with no issue. I heard of there being somebody trapped, but I never thought it was the king's own daughter...are you alright?" At this the girl sighed, reaching up to gently pat at the smaller dragon like a cat. She didn't seem to mind.

"Yes, I'm just fine. We're...I mean, I have no idea what to do, but I wish to battle away corruption just as he did. What's your name? Is it what she said...Layak?" He nodded, before laying down on the ground to become eye level with both of them, dragging down his mask just slightly to reveal a slight, toothy grin. He closed his eyes before speaking.

"You can come with me, back to where I remain when I'm not working. The others are friendly, and will likely accept you, as long as they realize you are not as corrupt as your father. I will train you, so that you can right the wrongs in this world. My own role is not the hero, so I don't understand why you're travelling with me..." Before he could continue, she grabbed the merchant, placed her back with her wares, and began to pick out the stray arrows they'd both been hit with, due to several confused mercenaries.

"I'm coming with you to see the world, to help, and, most of all, to find someone I can relate to. Will you allow me the opportunity to learn?"

"...Yes."
