Dry wind whispering in tall grasses, the eye of the sun blurred by the mirage of heat emanating from the barren dunes, and the whistle of a lone figure, hazy and ill-defined in the distance. By blazing star or frozen, moonless night- she will come. In the most desolate of lands, when one further step seems impossible to your broken body and the sun has taken all you have to give and more- she will be there. She will leave no traveler behind. Fear not, weary wanderer; muster your last strength from deep within, and she will guide you home. And when you lift your head, having reached the lush banks of the cool river and the city beyond, she will be gone, as if she never existed in the first place, and you will question if she were merely an image of a heat-addled mind or something more you cannot explain. As you stumble into the life-giving waters, from the places unseen the eyes of amber will sparkle knowingly, and fade away into the sand, waiting for the next stray vagabond…
