Since he was a hatchling, Winterchild was called 'ugly', and he ran away from the Arcane Flight due to the immense bullying.

When he did flee, he was found by Gaze who was out looking for ingredients for alchemy with Birch, she took the hatchling back to the clan and he was taken care of with kindness from both the caretakers in the nursery, and Augustus herself. He especially bonded with other hatchlings in the nursery at the time; Mamba and Copperhead.

He was given the name Winterchild due to the fact that when Gaze and Birch were leading him back to the clan, a single snowflake had landed on his nose.
