While his real name is Li Min (李旻) he prefers to be called Chang Geng, which was the name given to him by the woman he thought was his mother until he was a teenager and found out his identity as the missing son of the Emperor. Chang geng is the name of the evening star, and is considered to be an ill omen.

As a result of his difficult childhood, Chang Geng is reserved and doesn't trust many people- the exception being Gu Yun. His calm exterior however masks an obsessive darkness that lies within him- he has been cursed by Wuergu- the Bone of Impurity - since childhood, and cannot tell the difference between dreams and reality, and can easily become negatively fixated and possessive. As a result, he is fated to loose his sanity and descend in violent madness, destroying all those around him and then himself. However, he is determined to avoid the fate destined to him, and tries to find ways to fight his curse.

Chang Geng is very intelligent, and is skilled both in the Imperial Court as well as on the battlefield. As a teenager he figured out that Gu Yun was lying to him about his deaf-blindness, and embarked on a study of medicine to be able to help his yifu manage his symptoms. He has since become a skilled healer, excelling at both concocting medications and performing acupuncture.
