Vayne's undertaking of The Search, something every Guardian will undertake at some point in their life, led her far beyond her home in the Sunbeam Ruins.

Her journey was a long-winding road, much longer, much more confusing, than what she'd thought it would be.

There was a false start in protecting a Caravan, but it didn't fit. She traveled with a Scholar for a time, still no.

She thought it might be an ideal. Or perhaps to guard a Familiar.

No, none of that.

It was a chance flight over the Shifting Expanse that would lead her to an unexpected place. A call, a pull, that struck her curiosity.

It's here, in a lost place, that she found what she was looking for. Unlike many of the other denizens, those she protects here, are not among the living.

Vayne protects the dead. The ghosts, the phantoms that remain in this place.

So, she lives apart from the others who've gathered around Aether. Instead, she finds her place beside Shoal, assisting the wraith in zir work.

She has her own work, work that takes her away from Shoal.

Her journey here was not expected. It was not one she sought, necessarily, to undertake.

But if she can help the restless dead, if she can keep to her Charge, she will be content, even in this strange place.
