Biography
"Like an itch in the blood, an ache in the bones, the feeling will never give me rest."
Gladiator
xxxxThe air hung heavy, saturated with the heat, humidity and the ever present drone of insects. Crouched and poised, muscles tensed for a fight, Constance watched the small band of dragons practically tripping their way through the dense undergrowth. She'd smelled them a good hour ago, and upon finding them had needed all her self restraint to keep from snorting at their ineptitude and giving her position away. Since then, she'd been tailing the group, clearly unused to and woefully underprepared to cope with the Shrieking Wilds, searching for the best opening to jump the party.
xxxxHer companion's breath ghosted past the side of her face, his hood barely brushing her neck, making her shudder slightly. He was the only dragon that could sneak up on her like this, and the only one who could match her speed and ferocity, yet when he whispered to her his voice was soft. "Part of having a fight or flight response in recognizing the option of flight."
xxxx"I have no reason to flee this sorry bunch," she breathed in return.
xxxxThe male wildclaw, Diogo, shifted, his eyes glinting for a second under his hood, a poised 'is that so?', before the cloth shadowed his face again and he was turning away. "Attack then."
xxxx"I will," Constance huffed. "It's just..."
xxxxJust what? Just that something was off about the little group bumbling through the jungle. Just that there was something threatening about the puny fae leading the party. Just that she feared this dragon inexplicably. Constance would never admit to feeling cowed by any dragon, not out loud, but the leader of the group she'd been tailing gave her shivers down her spine.
xxxx"Do you have a sense for it?" Better vague affirmation than admitting that weakness.
xxxxDiogo's posture softened, curving toward Constance almost protectively. "The little moth is hardly an innocent. Yes, I feel it too."
xxxxA bright skydancer snapped a branch underfoot, and Constance winced at the sharp noise. Tailing them farther wouldn't be hard. She needed to understand it, needed to know why the presence surrounding the leading fae made the bile in her gut threaten to rise to her throat.
xxxxBehind her Diogo hissed. Constance barely registered the noise. Two days later and all Constance had been able to think between her increasing bouts of paranoia was that she needed to confront the enemy. Either she would snap the fragile neck of the dragon before her or she would be shown exactly what made her crest stand on end.
xxxxThe fae before her held her stare, level and unblinking. Poised and stock still, without even the slightest tremble to her crests, the fae spoke. "I can't see why my identity is important. I'm only passing through, if this is your territory. I apologize for the intrusion."
xxxxConstance laughed, a grating noise mangled by stress and adrenaline. "My territory? Clans a hundred strong balk at the idea of claiming the Wilds. No this isn't mine, but it isn't yours either." Constance narrowed her eyes to slits, a feral grin splitting her face. "You're powerless here."
xxxxWithout balking the fae replied, "Meaning you aren't. So help us."
xxxxDiogo lowered his stance, caught between diving forward and attacking and running as fast as possible from the madness of these dragons, but something on Constance's face stopped him, made him still in disbelief. The pale wildclaw raised her wings, drawing herself to her full height, teeth bared, grinning like the first time they'd fought, before dropping into low submission before the fae. "My pleasure, I'm sure."
