Ezra She/Her Charge: A dying forest |
The Flare
Stories speak of the young guardian, forced to give up her charge to a creeping sickness. They say she was unprepared to care for her charge, was caught unawares by a plague, unable to protect the one thing she lived for. Many speculate what happened to the guardian after that. Some say she perished of a broken heart, surrounded by the charred remains of her Charge. Others claim she turned into a vengeful spirit, hunting down the Cleanser that started the fire. No one expects her to have followed in the Cleanser's footsteps. Ezra is committed to her work. Following Chida around, battling sickness, death, her own demons. Chida doesn't allow her to carry out any Reapings, and she's grateful for it. She's much better suited to comforting whoever, or whatever, remains. |

Quote:
"Poison! Poison!" The creature shrieks, voice harsh and grating like claws on a blackboard. "Destroy it, you must destroy it!"
"No..." Ezra protests. The forest is all she knows. It isn't sick; she would know; she would feel it, in her heart. The creature screams louder. Ezra turns slowly, taking in the visage of her life Charge. Of the trees and shrubs making up her forest home. Of the sickness seeping through the ground. The rot has been here for a while. Everyone knows it. Ezra wishes it would go away. She's young, lucky to find her charge so soon, to find the one thing that completes her life. Now it's dying, and she can't save it. She locks eyes with a visitor. The Forest never gets visitors. A pearlcatcher, a wide-brimmed hat shielding his eyes. Something curls from his claws; smoke possibly, or something else. Ezra hopes it's something else, but her heart knows what it is. She says nothing as the intruder makes his way closer to her. Says nothing as he surveys his surroundings, takes in her dishevelled appearance. Says nothing as he lowers his head to greet her, eyes kind. "I'm sorry, little one." Ezra squeezes her eyes shut. It's okay, she wants to say, but her voice catches in her throat. The pearlcatcher seems to understand her, anyhow. The forest burns, and every part of Ezra's soul burns with it. |
