AVIARY KEEPER

Starseed wasn't born lucky. Well, she almost wasn't born at all, since her egg didn't properly develop the typical protective coating, but one that was almost too thin and fragile to be properly insulated against the cold of the Icefield. Even if her parents took extra care with her egg, nobody was sure the hatchling would be fine until she broke the shell, a bit small, but otherwise perfectly fine, healthy and curious.

She never was the biggest of her family, but her wings were wide and strong and carried her safely even in the worst snowstorm. It wasn't long before she spent most of her free time flying and watching, reporting back everything she saw and heard. For her it was little more than a game and an excuse to discover new places, but of course her clan knew how to put these informations to good use.

Day after day, her life was pretty uneventful. She woke up, helped her family and clan, explored, returned. Things changed when she got caught in a sandstorm over the Shifting Expanse and Naveed, who had recently joined clan Baileya, sensed her discomfort and went looking for her. Starseed was injured and dehydrated, but time and care allowed her to recover. While she knew her family was worried, she didn't want to leave the new friends she made. She resolved to fly back home to reassure everyone, and to inform them of her decision to live with clan Baileya. Naveed escorted her, and they were mates by the time they came back to the clan.

Starseed’s affinity for flight and pronounced empathy made her the ideal candidate for taking care of the aviary together with Alyssa, the leader. She cared for many hatchlings, seeing them grow into fine dragons, some leaving for other clans, some to serve the Stormcatcher. Starseed was serene. Her worries were little ones.
This came to an end when she died.

It was an accident, shot down by centaurs while she was helping the clan’s hunters move through the labyrinthine canyons. Maybe she was careless, or distracted, but it makes no difference in the end. She died, and she was brought back.

Her life is pretty uneventful. She no longer scouts or leaves the clan’s territory. She wakes up, tends to her family, the birds, and whatever the clan needs. She speaks very rarely and may seem cold to those who don’t know her well. She still feels joy, anger, sadness, love, she just is subtler in the ways they show. She doesn’t care, as long as those who matter can tell.
