Biography

Polaris
Meaning "Polar" in Latin
[puh-LEG-ruhs]

x860Zpz.png aa Polaris was said to have been first discovered by Ptolemy in 169 AD, however it was not until much later, in the 5th century, when it began to be used as a navigation tool[1]. Best known for said use, it's also called the "North Star" and used to help sailors align themselves when at sea.
aaPolaris is found close by other constellations in the northern hemisphere, such as Cepheus, Draco, and Camelopardalis, while it itself is apart of the constellation Ursa Minor, being the star at the end of the dipper[2].
aaDespite being called the North Star, it is actually three stars[3]. It is called a triple star system, meaning "a pair of binary stars circle one another at the center of the system, while a third star orbits the central pair"[4]. It was in 1780 that signs were discovered that it was not a single star, however, it was not until 2006 that scientists actually realized that it was three stars. It's their astronomical distance away from Earth (323 light years) that makes them seem as one star, their light having blurred so much.
aa Although Polaris is looked up to as the North Star, it's estimated that in 12,000 years t won't be, as the Earth's axis wobbles overtime. Despite this, in modern times it's still very close to the north pole, being only .7 degrees off target, and it's brighter than it was in the past, making it still a great navigation source for those at sea[3].
