Ban Yue was born to a father from Yong'an and a mother from Banyue, at a time when the two nations were at each others throats. Orphaned at a young age, she didn't fit in either place, and found herself alone at the boarder between the two nations, where she was saved from starvation by a young Yong'an general known as General Hua, who was actually Xie Lian. Her only friend was a boy from Yong'an named Pei Xiu.

Unfortunately, General Hua was "killed" trying to protect Ban Yue during a border skirmish, and Ban Yue and Pei Xiu were deeply affected by his supposed death, and took to heart his words about saving the common people.

Eventually Ban Yue learned black magic and the ability to control the scorpion-snake hybrids around the Kingdom of Banyue, which gave her a great deal of fear and respect in the kingdom, and she was appointed Guoshi - High Priest.
However, she was actually a subordinate of Pei Xiu, who was by now a solider in the Yong'an army. Believing themselves to be protecting the common people by supposedly preventing further bloodshed, they colluded to have Ban Yue open her city-state's gates to let the Yong'an soliders under the command of Pei Xiu capture the city. While Pei Xiu was successful, Ban Yue was captured by Banyue soliders and executed for her betrayal.

As a result of their traumatic deaths, Ban Yue and many of the Banyue soliders have been trapped within the crumbling city-state's ruins as ghosts.
