Was once a proud prince of a desert tribe that grew wealthy due to their control of the only oasis in the area. His egg was formed when a bolt of lightning struck the ground--a sign of the Stormcatcher's blessing to the tribe--and so was granted royalty status upon his hatching. However, his family's control of the oasis would not last forever. Trouble brewed as a rival tribe amassed allies and forces, eventually wresting control of the water through warfare and slaying the tribe's progenitors (his adoptive parents) in the process. Keir himself was spared and kept as a slave. He was wrapped in elegant silks that hid his chains and scars; flaunted at tribal gatherings and to visiting envoys like a living statue, a symbol of the strength of the oasis's new leaders. Keir attempted to rebel against his captors in any way possible, from "accidentally" breaking valuable pottery to spreading rumors amongst the nobles to provoke infighting. His rebellions did not go unpunished however--he bears several deep scars as a result. Eventually, Keir was freed when yet another tribe took control of the oasis and released all slaves held there.

Keir speaks little of his past, preferring to hid the markings of his bindings with jewelry and the trauma with an aloof and combative outer shell. His pearl is smaller than that of other pearlcatchers his age due to both malnourishment and little desire to preserve the painful memories of his captivity.
