Houtskool [howts-kohl], the Family's mortician. Their role is to examine the recently deceased for evidence of foul play and, if they find such evidence, resurrecting the individual for a brief period of time in order to gather details surrounding the death. If there's no evidence of a crime, Hoots (a nickname they pretend to hate but actually prefer over their name) is responsible for putting the body to rest in a respectful manner. Many consider this an affront to the Shadowbinder--an affront to all gods. Carmine and Blade hold no such reservations.

Interestingly, Hoots knows full well that what they do is unethical and evil. However, they're of the belief that the ends justify the means--they may be going against the natural order of the world every time they perform their primary task, but if that infraction means saving the lives of others, they see it as a small price to pay.

Gets along best with Afschaduwing, Baksteen, and Duister; gets along worst with Kantaloepa, Onweder, and Pereboom. Has a healthy respect for Geel, Koffie, Koperen, and Vurenhout. Likes bullying Hemelsblauw, but doesn't dislike him--they just find him funny to mess with.
