Perhaps, if you'd taken the time to acknowledge its presence, Amaranth would have offered you a bargain. All of your deepest desires fulfilled, and at an impossibly small cost to you. Well... a small physical cost, at the very least. The same cannot be said for the mental toll that has been taken on those who have dared to make a deal with it.

Some say that Amaranth stopped being a dragon the moment it tore its first victim's mind to shreds. Others say that it was never a dragon to begin with, but rather, an otherworldly being taking the form of an Undertide to gain the trust of others. No matter which is right or wrong, there is one thing to be sure of with Amaranth; if you wish to remain sane, it is to be avoided at all costs.
