Dr. Alexander MacDonald
Asst. Surgeon / Naturalist of HMS Terror Alexander McDonald was born on the 13th of September 1817. He was the son of Robert McDonald and Sarah McDonald. In 1839, after graduating from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh the previous year, McDonald joined the Scottish whaling industry. In 1840, McDonald joined the Scottish whaler James Penny aboard the vessel Bon Accord for a trip to the Arctic. When he came home, McDonald published a book about his experiences titled "A Narrative of Some Passages in the History of Eenoolooapik, a young Eskimaux". After leaving the whaling industry, McDonald joined the navy as a surgeon on the Apollo class frigate HMS Belvidera. On the 4th of March 1845, McDonald signed up for the Franklin expedition as an assistant surgeon aboard the HMS Terror. |
