"Curious? As in inquisitive?" his parents would reply with a nervous smile to the comments other dragons would make.

"No... you know. Curious as in strange. He's so strange," they'd say, frowning a little.

Curium had always had an intense curiosity about how things worked and why things happened. He'd spend hours dissecting and looking at the insides of the food his parents gave him, and staring with fascination at the clan mage's cauldron as she made flames of blue, green, and purple dance up from it to entertain the hatchlings.

Deep down he knew it wasn't just magic, and there must be something behind all this - How did animals come alive? Why did certain things produce different colours of flame when set alight? Why was anything the way it was?

As he grew older, the discouragements from other clan members became stronger as they tried to convince him to take up hunting or foraging as a more useful hobby instead. But he knew that wasn't what he wanted to do with his life - so the day he grew of age, he packed up his things and left his clan on a caravan to the city.

Maybe... he would finally find answers there.
