Slade is a lover, not a fighter. That having been said, don't be surprised if he tries to gore you for suggesting he's a bad at what he does... which he is. He's terrible. The worst. His pickup lines are bad and his track record for "romance" is even worse. He certainly couldn't hold down a family of his own, and his previous almost-mates and breeding partners (Fera, Tahlena, Bulah, etc.) would absolutely vouch for that. Before coming to terms with his sexuality, Slade had commitment problems when nesting and tended to get lost in his daydreams. Once the honeymoon period was over, he would trip over himself backpedalling to escape his relationships. No one in the clan holds it against him, though: he eventually found himself and settled down with Garreth, another male Ridgeback.

Despite hailing from the Windswept Plateau, falling into the role of Earth Ambassador for the Vaulkreath clan came entirely on accident. After prowling Dragonhome's Greatwyrm's Breach for a scavenging run, an earthquake resulted in a local lair's hatchlings being trapped under rubble. Buried with them, Slade kept the younglings alive until help could arrive three days later. He was awarded with the Stonekeeper Sash as a result, a gift he cherishes deeply. Ursai later asked if he would serve as their clan's Earth representative. For once humbled in the face of his own ego, Slade accepted.

When all is said and done, Slade is a valued member of the Vaulkreath Clan and loves all of his extended family... even the infuriating ones that know how to push his buttons, like Arquen. Garreth makes fun of him for falling for the other Ridgeback's jabs.

S T O R Y T I M E

When he was just a hatchling, his mother Byte used to tell him about all the wonderful regions across Sornieth, beyond their home in the Reedcleft Ascent. The towering Cloudscrape Crags in the Southern Icefield, the vast Lightning Farm of the Shifting Expanse, the Crystalspine Reaches of the Starfall Isles...

When he first left home, he got a map from Pinkerton and set out to explore the entirety of the world. First, he started with the Sunbeam Ruins. Better to start with someplace boring and work your way up, right?

He didn't imagine he would stay.

Garreth snorted. "You thought this place was boring?"

"It's a ruin. Of course it is." Slade rolled his eyes, stretching his wings briefly before settling down next to the other Ridgeback. "Who's winning?"

Adonite had been left turn to watch the most recent batch of hatchlings below. While their parents were away hunting in the Sundial Terrace, someone needed to stick around close to the nests. Unfortunately, the old-timer Guardian was no match for riled up Skydancer chicks.

Garreth rumbled. "They'll be old enough soon to strike out on their own, soon. I wonder where they'll all end up."

"Hopefully not closeby. They're menaces... and don't get sentimental on me!" Slade chuckled, only half-warning. "Over hatchlings, no less!"

"Says you, who was buried with three for as many days. You still keep in touch with them."

"Eugh, I can still taste dirt." The earthquake. That he could go without remembering, but Garreth did give him the reminder to send another letter soon. Those Snappers had grown on him. Slade paused when the other dragon's words sank further. "What's this talk about striking out? You sound... fond."

"You told me yourself you wanted to explore the world once." Garreth, always cold and stoic, sounded oddly warm as the words rolled off his tongue. "Maybe Ursai will... allow us temporary leave to do that. Maybe a year or two."

"Wait, you're serious?" Slade sat up, stared at his mate incredulously. "You're taking my pillow talk to heart?"

Garreth was not a talkative dragon. Slade never imagined his mate was listening when he talked about all the places he wanted to visit, but apparently he had. Garreth turned his head toward the horizon as the sun rose over the Beacon. "I debated exploring the world myself, a few times. It would be nice with someone you... love."

"That's..." Slade was stunned. "I... I would love to go with you, too."

They sat in silence for a long time, contemplating the future.
