Carleen


Often described as an ephemeral yet kind dragon, Carleen is the dragon hatchlings go to if they are seeking treats, or candy that their parents had denied them following dinner. On sunny days, she can be found gardening with Navahine, a close friend of hers’, who tends to be the kind of dragon to listen, and not speak. This however, comes to Carleen rather easily, as she tends to drift off into daydreams while working, if she’s not careful. Carleen’s tendency to drift off can irritate Maleficent, her mentor, a bit, but typically, they get along well. When not working, Carleen spends her time in the hatchery watching the mothers and their hatchlings and occasionally telling them stories – although the hatchlings often notice that Carleen tends to trail off while telling her stories as she daydreams again!

A favourite of the familiars for the treats she gives them as well, this often causes clashes between Maleficent and Carleen as Carleen sees nothing wrong with sharing some beast appropriate food with the familiars, but Maleficent prefers to run a clean ship with no extra food being shared between dragon and beast. Carleen promises that she listens when she’s being told off but if one was peeking through the window, they could almost swear that Carleen was off in the land of the Faes!

Carleen enjoys planting Seaberry, Sea Grass, Light’s Breath, and Black-lipped Wolfsbane – which, being poisonous to many animals, Maleficent insisted that Carleen take a thorough shower before entering the clinic or the shelter, as many of the animals may fall ill if she plays with them with the Wolfsbane dust on her. While tt took Navahine a while to warm up to Carleen’s ditsy persona, as she let the young dragon into her heart, she quickly realised that Carleen was as quick as a whip – part of the reason Maleficent had hired her! It was just like Carleen though, to hide her intelligence behind a veneer of wispiness but dragons who know her insist to those who find her intolerable – who were often just grumpy themselves – that they just had to persist with getting to know her though, and they would discover how quick and witty the dragon truly was.

As an apprentice, Carleen is often seen playing with the familiars, and bringing the shyer, quieter hatchlings on guided tours – with their parents accompanying them for added support. On many an occasion however, she has been caught by Maleficent in the process of giving some of the familiars away to the hatchlings and their parents! Carleen, however, insists to Maleficent that Maleficent’s hoarding problem has led to them having too many familiars for them to take care of, but Maleficent often argues back that it’s Carleen’s fault that the familiars are so clingy – they wouldn’t be if she just didn’t give them so many treats! Carleen often drops the matter at that, but Maleficent also allows the hatchlings’ parents to care for their new familiars, a win for both dragons in the end.
