The gold, flaking at the surface as it cooled, was taken up
in wrapped claws; between the chants of her kin, it came
spattering across her face, her body, her wings. There came
no burn, there came no sting, but the embrace of warm belief.

She would take the blessings of her elders, with whom she had
shared whispered, hopeful ideations since her hatchling days.
She would trek further into Dragonhome, facing the whipping
winds and the haze of dust that hid the journey ahead. She
would find others like her, aspirants of a different kind of path,
defiantly standing at the edge of the world and making peace
on the brink. She would find a new Way as her forebears did,
to make these outskirts a home.
