Christof had spent days, weeks, stuck in the confines of the egg. No matter how hard he had tried, it had been to no avail. Until one day, he struck the hard shell with the side of his horn. The blow glanced off, but a small crevice that opened up gave the young tundra an insight of the wide blue sky. Christof worked at the crack until blue became red, then as dark as the inside of the egg. Finally, it tore open. The hatchling shook out his already bushy fur, looking around excitedly for any sign of other dragons.
But he found none.
There wasn’t even the trace of a scent. A million things raced through Christof’s mind, a million different outcomes. He tried to shake them all off, except for one. Maybe, maybe they had gone to look for food.
Yes, that was right. Christof was sure of it. He plopped down to wait.
His confidence dwindled with each setting sun. Christof stood up and shook his legs, shivering as his mane failed to block out the cold. He was a tundra, yes, but any hatchling at that age should’ve been able to shelter from the elements from the safety of his parents’ wings. Determination flooded the young dragon, and he set out on his journey, vowing that if his family wouldn’t come back, he would find them.
The trek dragged into weeks, then months, then years. Christof was following only his instincts, and the occasional scent that even vaguely resembled his. He scoured every footstep of Snowsquall Tundra and the Frigid Floes, but was put off by the foreboding peaks that jutted out sharply from the horizon.

None of the dragons seemed... right. Many family clans were confused by his slightly peculiar habits, and not one of them offered to take the young tundra in.
Being alone for so many years should've taken a toll on Christof, but he remained optimistic that he would find his family. Each time a clan drove him out, he promised himself the next was going to be it.
That is, until he met Tora. The young guardian on the search was the same age as him, and the two became fast friends. She was cast out because of her cautious and somewhat hostile nature, but Christof managed to see through her appearance, and learn to appreciate her protective side.
Tora offered to join him on his journey, and Christof gladly accepted. He savored her companionship. Every time Christof was discouraged in the slightest, Tora would vent with him, even about the tiny things that would not make a difference.
As the years went by, Christof began to feel something other than just friendship. Feelings that he never would’ve dreamed of flooded his heart every spare moment he spent with the guardian. Eventually, they grew too strong to ignore. Christof confessed, and Tora agreed to become his mate. He was overjoyed. The pair made their way to the Southern Icefields, determined to start fresh in life, to let no traces of their pasts linger. They met other stragglers, abandoned or exiled for unjust reasons. The same as them, looking to face the future, and not dwell in the past.
Christof’s welcoming and Tora’s strength united them. The others saw them as leaders, and soon, they became a clan. A clan that looked past times gone by, that did not care about appearances.
A true family.
But every so often, exchanging a knowing look with Tora, Christof sets off again, mane rippling in the howling wind. A search may last for several days, even a week. Christof knows very well that the chances of finding his lost parents are second to none, but he will never give up hope. So he gathers exotic trinkets, toys that the youngest members of his clan would enjoy. And as he steps back into the lair, Christof is met by the excited grins of hatchlings, their awe-filled eyes and welcoming squeaks.
This, he thinks to himself, is home.
