美国著名人类学家拉班·修琉斯贝利博士(Dr. Laban Shrewsbury)于1864年生于威斯康星州的巴拉波(Baraboo)，他受教于牛津大学博物馆的爱德华·泰勒(Edward Tylor)，成了太平洋岛屿神话与艺术的专家（尽管他并未到访过该地区）。1903年，他就任为密斯卡托尼克大学的首位人类学教授，但几年后就辞去教职，埋头于研究。他出版了数部著作，其中最有名的一部是《基于〈拉莱耶文本〉进行的对晚期原始人神话原型的研究》(Myth-Patterns of Latter-Day Primitives with Especial Reference to the R'lyeh Text)。1915年的一天，博士称要外出散步，离开家门，从此失踪。许多人以为修琉斯贝利博士死了，但他其实是去了塞拉伊诺星的大图书馆，在那里潜心研究多年，调查了各种崇拜克苏鲁的教团的情报。博士失踪后，他位于阿卡姆的住所一直保持原样，因为博士的一位亲戚委托律师索顿斯塔尔(E.
