______ Claws click. Fabric snips. The guise begins to fall in place. The cloth, coarse and dark, catches on the curve of talons.

Moonlight scarcely illuminates her work as Lilith crafts. Charms and weaves and sews, creating a garment never meant to be taken off. She must be careful to avoid its lure too. This is not the first cloak she’s made designed for this task, but that doesn’t guarantee it won’t go wrong. After all, mind magic is a fickle thing.

Last night, she’d noticed a young hatchling playing in the clearing by herself. Her pearl clutched in her hand, she’d stalked a rat with a natural talent that Lilith had to admire. She would be perfect for this. Nearly silent. Ruthless. Everything a demon could want from her newest reaper.

The thread is tied. The cloak, simple yet effective, is finished. It is heavy with spells, creating a vacuum in which to store souls. It’s her best work.

The next night, Lilith watches. The hatchling plays among the trees, dancing with shadows. Lilith’s talons clack against the cool stone of the cave, bracelets and herbs clinking. She is disguised by her own shadow.

The cloak is placed by the entrance. Alluring for a curious hatchling. An offer she can’t refuse. The temperature drops. Trees sway. A hatchling grows close, as Lilith slinks away.

Lilith will live to see another day. 		______
