"Please. I'mma scared."
Sitting before the clan's matriarch was a young, gold Ridgeback with red eyes; the clan's second Plague refugee that day alone. But how could a clan progenitor turn away a frightened hatchling?
"I'm scared. Scared of… her."
"Plaguebringer?" As soon as she'd said the name, she wished she hadn't. Shandi reached down and nuzzled the shaking Ridgeback, ignoring the reek of decay and raw sores.
"I wanna serve the dee-ye-ties. I really do. But not her. I don't wanna be sick always and I don't wanna have that darkness with me."
"So send her to the Arcanist." Dreamkeeper's sudden, massive presence startled Shandi. "She doesn't want to be exalted by Plague, and Plague we are not."
"Is that what you want, young one?" The Ridgie nodded.
"More than anything. No more Plague forever."
"Then I will give you my leave to go." She stepped forward again, pressing her muzzle to the hatchling's forehead and whispering the prayer to the Arcanist.
She was at once suffused with a rosy light, and smiled once, through tears, before turning toward the Observatory.
Behind her scattered a trail of treasure, along with a mating gift from Heatsink to Dreamkeeper.
