A cursed idol; they were not a gift.

Gazes of admiration soothed the ache of being far from the forest they were created in. A gift the inhabitants called them. A gift that deserved a name. Medeia. Medeia, a name given. Medeia, a name kept. Medeia, the creatures whispered at their feet, voices full of awe and laden with prayers.

Prayers for good health paid by keeping them polished like new. Prayers of safety as they were layered in fine silks. Prayers for fortune, hand-crafted jewelry carefully placed along their form. Medeia basked in all that was given to them, and with what little power they did carry, gave back. Prayers that soon faltered; trickling down as if stopped up by a dam. Creatures that stopped bringing gifts, instead taking what did not belong to them. Hunger that needed sating.

It began small. Feathers that might have always been in a different position. Claws that must have sharpened with age. Eyes that held the dark shadows of the forest, not the bright clearings the creatures swore that they had once been. Uneasiness led to fewer visitors, led to decay, led to movement.
