A R A C E L I
matriarch of the clan
mate of Pollux

Araceli hails from a large clan on the east coast of the Shifting Expanse. She grew up in the deep and rolling seas, becoming one with the water. The majority of her life in her birth clan was relatively carefree, and there she learned a variety of skills that would serve her better later in life. When the time came, she underwent her maturity ceremonies that were native to the clan, and left to find her Charge, a sacred and innate duty given to all Guardians.

Her travels led her far across the Expanse and into the territories of other flights, although for the most part she was left to herself, recognized as being on her sacred journey Her search took over a decade, but she found nothing that called to her spirit. Eventually she fell into a life as a clan-less dragon, too ashamed to even return home, hiring out her services as a quick-witted and tough dragon for odd jobs.

One fall, she found herself flying up the coast of her youth. She didn't approach her clan, who still remained in their labyrinthine cave systems in the hills next to the coast. She watched them for a long time, days tumbling into nights and rising again, cloudless and carefree. She let herself stay a week, watching the clan's activities, curious if she would see her parents (she didn't -- and being the fall season it was possible they were further inland gathering supplies). On the last day she prepared to leave, and it was that evening that one of them confronted her, a male guardian with markings of the same clan as her. She bared her teeth, thinking he would attack, feeling magic ripple up her spine, but he kept his wings and fins down, sending a passive signal to her.

He talked calmly to her, telling her the ancient stories their clan told to hatchlings, to teach them of the ways of the world and their history. Then he talked of himself, a Guardian like her who had gone on his search -- and failed -- returning back to his home clan, swallowing his pride and existing to serve however he could. He told her he felt compelled to wait, and never questioned it. And then things clicked into place. The priests told her that you would just know who or what your Charge was. It could be anything, really, but a Guardian always knew. It wasn't a need or a want, a lust or a desire: it was bone-deep, chilling, and a completion of life. And Araceli found that in Pollux, and him in her.

In the morning, Pollux returned with Araceli to their homeclan, reunited with extended family. She had forgotten Pollux was a yearmate with her, and as she walked amongst everyone, she remembered their time together before she had left, a half-year ahead of him. While they would've been welcome amongst family again, the two chose to leave instead, and make their way off the coast and further inland.

Eventually the pair arrived at the western-most part of the Expanse, where the lands crackle and shift and blend into the domain of the Tidelord. Part of the land was some of the Stormcatcher's, where the water flowed into the immense valley before all the moisture was evaporated. They eventually found an abandoned mesa in the vicinity, and decided to call it home. With a small access to water, the two Guardians were more than happy with their surroundings.

Araceli commands the clan, firmly but fairly. She has not felt a calling to have a clutch, and instead rears and teaches the hatchlings of other clanmembers, as well as giving leadership and advice to the clan. Wrapped in shawls and veils to help combat the relentless sun this far away from the rolling inland clouds of the Expanse, she gives off an air of aloofness and mysteriousness. But to the clan, she is a foundation upon which they grow and flourish.

She occasionally leads research on studying the storm and wind patterns on the outer edges of the Expanse, which the dragons inland find always useful, and helps maintain a steady supply of materials, food, and income for the clan, outside of their creative pursuits. Fresh water from the edges of the Tidelord's domain is also a rare commodity that they trade, useful for drinking where the east coast is seawater and undrinkable, and it is hard work pulling water from a desert.

Her ever faithful companion is Rakuli, a Storm Seeker she saved as a hatchling while on her search. He stays with her constantly when she leaves the caves, but while she stays inside he prefers to roost in the upper caves of the mesa, curiously peering at the Imperials who make their homes there.
