You do not question Rhaegal. You do not harm Rhaegal. You do not plot against Rhaegal. These are golden rules that are uttered to all that join under his mighty wings, though not by his own tongue, but by those who are devoted to his leadership and are determined to see themselves be carried swiftly into greatness, into that glowing, vibrant sun. Founder of the city of light, Aurelia, the pale guardian has deftly returned this husk of a once powerful and archaic city into a reflection of it’s former glory, leaving the doors open to those who wish for a place to call home. White, towering pillars and strings of lights, houses fit for the occupants down sprawling roads and twisting paths that carve intricate patterns into the body of this glittering metropolis, a fine piece of art within it’s own right. Rhaegal is a reserved yet still demanding leader, if not with his presence alone, a figure most look up to and respect as their founder, ruler, and to some, their saviour… though perhaps somewhere in the darkness, some would see him as an obstacle instead. And he sees things others do not see, not even the oracles of the water. In the light he sees hope and prosperity shining down on he and his followers, that jagged, golden jaw tugging so slightly at the corners to see what his city has become, and yet in the darkness he sees shining claws and roaring maws, spittle and blood and the cries of the damned. Perhaps the most terrifying thing of all is that he himself does not know where these visions stem from, and why they infiltrate his mind, at night when he sleeps, during the day when he wakes, and worst of all is he does not know how to explain to those listening as to why he, the leader, the great, the founder, has become so predisposed to staring past them, stunned into silence at the images in his head. They do not question him, or speak ill, but they know authority comes at a price. Rhaegal knew this would happen the first time he ever lay eyes on the crumbling ruins of Aurelia before it held that name in high regard, back when the guardian roamed the lands of the light by his lonesome. No parents that he knew, no partners by his side, nothing to drive the being forward until the visage of broken rock and potential blinded his tired eyes as he approached, that simmering, almost gut-wrenching feeling in the very core of his soul calling to him. Once broken walls now fixed, desolation turned into renewal, this city was his meaning, and he shared it in mind, body and soul. Rhaegal, somehow, knew that the conurbation would not remain under his sole supervision for long. At first fellow light dragons would wander in and ask to stay, or his sleep was interrupted by flashes of panic and fear, of a dragon running or flying in mad desperation, and sure enough when he woke, there, at the gates, would be a panting, perhaps wounded form, calling for help. It was more of a surprise to see other elements arrive, however, a long distance even to some and yet here they decided to stay, of all places, and yet still he welcomed them with warm shelter and even warmer food, their small clan growing ever larger. Their efforts combined helped clean and reconstruct other sectors of the metropolis for when the current renovated space became too crowded, to which opened up all sorts of secrets and buildings repurposed into one thing or another. He, whilst busy at best, even managed to settle down with a partner at one time to produce two offspring which still remain at his side today, perhaps his greatest allies in this sea of elements. Despite the clawing at the back of his mind that something was amiss, Rhaegal does not let it hinder him. He cannot let it hinder him, for he is their leader, their prophet, and above all else, he must remain vigilant even in the shadow of even the darkest threats. |
