The Beginning
Nestled deep within the ice of the Reclaimer's Glacier, a long forgotten glacial cavern laid dormant. It had been abandoned many years ago when almost all of its inhabitants left following a terrible disaster. The only dragons to call this place home now were two reluctant gaolers.Celici laid unmoving in the center of the cavern next to the base of what once was a mighty pillar of ice. Though it had been many years since the incident, Celici was still in a deep depression. Her inability to let go of the past chained the two to the cavern despite dwindling resources. With little left to eat and an arduous journey to the nearest stockade, the days seemed numbered for the pair. Zofren, Celici's lifelong mate, sat in silence next to his forlorn partner. Every day, he tried his best to convince the former Overseer that what happened was not her fault, to no avail. As the days went by, any chance of conversation between the two became increasingly slim. His love for her was undying, but his patience less so, as his every attempt to cheer her up had no effect whatsoever. Seeing her in this state impacted him as well, to the point where even he felt like there was no point in fighting to stay alive. Years of complete isolation watching the love of his life deteriorate to this point had broken him completely. Ready to perish next to his love and let the ice reclaim him, the male gaoler unceremoniously collapsed next to his mate with a hearty thud. The two exchanged no words, as the both of them understood in that moment the other's immense devotion without any need for them. Zofren's heavy eyelids drooped until his eyes shut completely. Within moments, the world went dark. ~~ Vibrations within the ice caused Zofren to rouse. Though he was not sure of how much time had passed, it had certainly not been enough for him to go quietly in his sleep. Movement in the cavern could only mean one thing with both Zofren and Celici laying down: intruders must have entered. Though Zofren did not care about dying at the hands of raiders, he had a flicker of curiosity within him. In the cavern's history, nobody had ever found this place, much less entered it. He rose to his feet. It took him several seconds to stabilize himself, for he was groggy and weak, but he eventually managed to. Once standing, he nudged his mate, hoping to garner her attention. She had no doubt felt the vibrations as well, but unlike him, she likely dismissed them. To his surprise, she lifted her head slightly, gazing up at him with frosty blue eyes—eyes that he had not had the pleasure of looking back at in quite some time. The two gaolers remained locked like this for several moments, staring deeply into the other's eyes... that is, until the source of the vibrations revealed itself. It was another dragon, clearly, but certainly not another gaoler. No, this one was... strange. It had gaoler-like features, but it was significantly smaller than any gaoler. Zofren could tell by scent that this dragon, too, was ice-blessed, but how could such a thing be possible? Evidently, the other dragon felt the same way. It visibly cowered in the shadow of the massive gaolers, but it remained frozen in place, too frightened to even flee. For the first time in quite a while, Celici also rose, but not with the same intentions as Zofren. She jolted upright with terrifying speed, only to lunge at the intruder just as quickly. (wip) |
