Great whale of the northern night sky. No one knows her name; no one can fly far enough to reach her before their wings give way and they crumple back onto the earth. She is simply referred to as the "Taijing," Great Whale, proprietress of her golden throne in the midst of the far away.
"Child, what are you doing here? The night is dangerous and lonely."
"I'm not lonely," good-naturedly the child grins, "I have you here."
"Ah, but I am so far away. Even now you hear but a sliver of my voice."
His eyes widen. They fit more stars—"Really? You must be so loud, then. Do you have to strain your voice to talk to me?"
"A little bit, but that's alright."
"Oh," his face darkens but for a split second. "I'm sorry. I'll try harder to come closer to you next time."
Though she is eons away from the rest of the world, the child gets the impression of a placid smile blooming on the great whale's golden face. She loved the children of the earth so. The adults saw her as either
