Biography

Some of my earliest memories: before they fade out

1. Stomping small red berries. Ornamental. Grey lighting, near the side of a house or garage.

I always thought this might be from Tennessee, never been certain it’s a real memory though. My parents say we didn’t have bushes with berries in TN.

2. Fishing with Dad and Bob. Rod in the water, the sun beating down. Excitement and surprise at reeling in a “sizable” fish. Large steady arms behind me helping me draw the long, green-yellow sea creature up from it’s murky emerald home and unto the shore. The teeth! The spiky teeth! I’m sure I mentioned catching a Northern Pike to Mom and Cheris as soon as we got back inside.

Catching Sunnies and Pumpkinseeds. I liked their names. I remember the afternoon Sun, golden orange warmth, a large branch curving above gentle water. The smell of fish, unpleasant. The feeling of a fishing bobber in my hand, and how much I loved the look of those little red and white spherical ones.

3. The sheep toy. Or ram? Just a tiny glimpse of him scooting across a carpeted surface.

4. Slurping up coconut water in Cheris’s kitchen. Hating it.

5. Playing Chinese checkers and Guess Who? in Bob and Cheris’s living room. Laying on white or grey carpet, with light from the sliding doors.

6. Cruising around in B and C’s boat during the 4th of July. Lots of American flags and banners draped, on other ships and maybe our own.

7. Recieving a stuffed animal from a man right next to or inside a dark garage. Fairly certain it was Dad's Dad giving me the adorable brown cat beanie baby.

8. Sunny regular day, biking with D, B, and E. Pitching over into the woods silently, seeing trees and bushes as I skidded to a stop. Crunchy leaves. I was very lucky not to smack into anything.

9. Reading time with Mom and Dad. All snuggled up, watching the pages and sometimes reading just a few words ahead in my own mental tone before hearing Mom or Dads rendition.

Always tensing up when Dad read that glow in the dark Halloween book. He'd rub a flashlight against the pages to get parts to glow yellow / green. And he'd cackle on the page with the witch. Loud enough it would usually scare me.
Mom's super gentle tones reading stuff like "dream snow", the book with Luella the cow, and later on stuff like "Poppy and Rye".

10. Looking through the wooden cracks on the back deck. Seeing tiny pink robin chicks with their beaks wide open. I thought it was cute.

11. Putting Ghostie on the swingset and trying to push him without throwing him off. Fairly certain I didn't succeed.

12. The gritty damp sand in Grandma’s car after we walked on the beach. Not really a pleasant feeling but has very strong positive association.

13. The excitement of getting up in the dark at Grandma's house. Usually she'd be up by the time I was. Rummaging in the kitchen or drinking coffee and reading the paper on the porch. Or letting Maggie out.

She had these snack bars, and she'd let me choose one before we went to walk. Cocao puffs, cheerios, and trail mix were the flavors I think.

14. The smell of grandma's house. It was odd. I think maybe cat litter and cat treats. But I would quickly get used to it.

15. One of the first times I remember going, there was cat litter in the sheets and we had to shake it off before getting in bed. The sheets were super thin, which I don’t think I liked. But I was excited to be there and exhausted. Ready to sleep.

16. Getting exhausted on road trips. Mom and Dad would encourage me to sleep. And I never understood how they could stay awake. I would feel guilty, and that I wouldn’t be able to handle that responsibility as an adult.

17. Chicago. The Shed. I can see it. A room on the left with souvenirs, gifts. Where I got the big seahorse stuffed animal. The Orange dad seahorse with 3 babies in his pouch.
And straight ahead a room with a giant circular fish tank.
I think there was a very small aquarium somewhere in the Shed with seahorses. And that area with what might have been another store or something else, next to and sort of above the place where trainers would interact with whales / dolphins. The Belugas were my favorite. Looking all like marshmallows! I loved visiting there.

18. Maybe 10. Sitting in the spa on the boundary between day and night, purple-ly pink sky, bats flying. Little dark silhouettes with spastic wings and flight patterns, scooping bugs from the pool with seemingly clumsy dives. Listening to Five for Fighting's "100 years", feeling overwhelming fear and pain, melancholy about wasting my life. Asking if it was about getting closer to dying and meeting God. M saying something like "Probably not, but that's a good interpretation.".
