They/Them the Spring Spirit |
There once was a legend of four wind spirits, born of the very gusts of air that permeated each season. These spirits were mischievous, tugging at clothes, whipping themselves into flurries one moment and calm breezes the next. They weren't very powerful, not at first, but like the winds they embodied, things change.
It started with the winter spirit. They wanted to do more than chill people, they wanted to freeze the waters and send the snow farther. Not to be outdone, the summer spirit wished to carry the heat with it, scorching people instead of giving them the relief that usually came with a breeze. Autumn wanted to blow further, spread its spores and leaves to the farthest reaches of the world. The only one that was content was spring. What more could they want? Gentle refreshing breezes, playfully pulling on loose threads, and carrying the birds on the winds, they already had everything they needed. Spring watched in amusement as their siblings argued and grappled for power, but that amusement turned to dread and then horror as one by one their siblings got what they wanted. Each season in turn became unbearable. Spring alone stood comforting in the onslaught, a bastion that people prayed for. The spirit of spring didn't know what to do, how could they hope to stop their siblings? The prayers and wishes of the people though could give them enough strength to wrest the power of their siblings from them. Spring didn't want to, but they took the power granted to them and, one by one, stole the other season's powers for themself. It was too much. The powers consumed spring and soon they blew harder, further, and more disastrous than any one of them alone had. The prayers they once relied on soon turned to pleas that fell on unhearing ears. Seeing no recourse, the people combined their efforts and laid a trap for the spirit. For the longest time, each and every plan failed. How does one capture the very wind? But then a great mage appeared and cast a spell on a lone tree. Slowly, as the tree grew, it absorbed every breeze that blew through its boughs. The spring spirit never noticed until it was too late. They found themselves trapped inside the tree, unable to blow anymore. The other seasons, cowed by their sibling's rampage, reemerged and vowed to never let power tempt them again. The absence of the spring breezes, while painful at first, soon grew to be history and the tree lay forgotten. Being cut down was inevitable, after all, nothing could hold the wind forever. The spirit flew free across the world once more, their overwhelming powers long since drained by the tree. Spring laughed as they danced with their siblings once more, and the world rejoiced.
