< Before >

Before meeting Hingan, Silere had been making a living off of street fighting for several years. They enjoyed it, being able to fight how they wanted with limited rules, and while not being able to live comfortably, still made a living.

They met Hingan with a broken wrist and a dodge of sharp teeth - which they met back with a right hook and a swing of a sword that clanged off tough scales.

After the fight, Silere helped Hingan upright and they went their separate ways. Silere forcing themself to ignore their wrist and focus on the next day.

Showing up to the arena they where met with Hingan offering to patch up their broken wrist. They accepted.

Both of them where around the same age and they found they both enjoyed the same thing, fighting, even if it was a bit surprising for Silere that Hingan did.

Sparring came soon after and Silere found they enjoyed the company.

Works along side their other half as an executioner and guard under Ardatha. They both live together in a small apartment and are saving up money to buy a more permanent residence.

Can commonly be found around [name of Arena] or within their own home, usually sparring with Hingan or sharpening their sword. Their upkeep of their equipment is meticulous - as is the process of which they carry out their work.

< Before >

Before meeting Silere, Hingan had been working in the manual labor work force. His size as a guardian put him in high demand. He eventually turned to street fighting due too many reports of nearly starting a fight with coworkers despite his usually calm demeanor.

He met Silere with a busted wing and a near skewer to the eye, which they returned with a lashing of his tail and an attempted mauling.

After the fight, Hingan helped Silere stand and they went their separate ways. Hingan had to focus on making enough to live - given his lesser reputation.

Though, Hingan noticed his yesterday's opponent hasn't dressed their wrist and that just couldn't do, could it?

Hingan hasn't met that many others his age, worried his blunt speech would get in the way but found that Silere seemed to be much the same.

Silere understood he means no offense when he blurts things out causing his scuffle count to decrease.

He can commonly be found shadowing Silere or swimming in the stream near their apartment. Hingan's love of water comes in handy within [name of arena]'s flooded fights.

Observations on Dectius Surlidaye: Last Fifty Festival Cycles

Abstract

Dectius Surlidaye, or Surlidaye, is a species of creature rarely discussed and more so rarely documented. Although sightings are overall uncommon, most end in attacks due to Surlidaye's extremely territorial behavior [1, 2]. We aim to discuss the species' behavioral patterns, biology, and what its existence proposes to life living within Tidelord's Domain - sightings outside of Sea of a Thousand Currents are all unconfirmed. Collecting this data and understanding these creatures more could help dragonkind avoid future attacks and help prevent casualties.

Habitat

Surlidaye, is a non-sentient, non-draconic, species who patrols an unknown amount of territory within the waters of Tidelord's Domain. Most commonly spotted in Tsunami Flats [2, 3, 4] and the coastal regions of Driftwood Drag [3, 5] for areas with heavy draconic activity but they seem to avoid draconic activity as a whole. Most sightings have come from Scattered Archipelago [3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13], Northern Light Currents [3, 4, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13], and the open ocean [3, 6, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19]. Surlidaye's are on average seen from at the surface to four hundred meters down [15, 18, 19, 20] but have been confirmed to deep dive after prey [12, 14, 19] or with killed prey [19].

They approach recently chummed water like most predators [2, 4, 5], along with large animal carcasses [4], and it's one of the likely factors in why they approach dragons when they do.

Surlidaye's range is unknown and so is their natural habitat. They are covered in kelp [21] and there have been unconfirmed but similar to confirmed attacks [22, 23, 24, 25, 25, 27, 28] within multiple kelp beds around areas they have been previously documented in which leans into the hypothesis of a kelp bed dwelling creature.

The estimated range is quite large [see photo below].

Behavior

Surlidaye is more likely to attack than not [1, 2]; their draconic encounters have been aggressive or from a far range.

They are mainly ambush predators [2, 10, 15] but are willing to actively hunt down prey [12, 14] on occasion. It is unconfirmed if they use their kelp covered body as a means of camouflage to aid their ambush hunting style. Hunting habits have not been observed in full.

Surlidaye has been traced back to vocal calls [29]. It's unsure what the calls are for as Surlidaye has never been seen in groups, only documented ever being alone.

There have been two validated reports of a Surlidaye leaving the water [30, 31] and both times the creatures had their heads still submerged - seemingly having left the water backwards. It is not known why.

Biology

From the creature's indents in the sand from sitting on the shore, photos, and estimated sizes from confirmed eye witness reports, all independent sightings with concrete ways of inferring length measure to around [insert length range] [31].

Surlidaye have kelp hanging from the top of the head to the tip of the tail along the spine and tangled around limbs, horns, and fins. It is unknown how it is acquired. The body that is visible is bulky and muscular. The snout is visible from below the kelp and its nostrils rest on the top of the head [see photos below].

They have consumed dragon [2, 14], shark [17], and whale [3, 15], confirming they will eat reptile, fish, and mammal if given the chance; unsure if these are simply opportunistic or actual feeding habits. Unknown if they eat plant matter, making them an omnivore, or if it's solely carnivorous.

Sweeping the deck, Natal looks out over the ocean's horizon: the sea is calm, the breeze is pleasant, their commanding officer lazily barks out orders, and there's not a storm cloud in the sky.

"We'll be home in no time after this men, just five knots to go! I can see it from here!" The silk frame's his worry free face as he continues to do nothing but read the Waystone.

Natal grips the broom harder at the announcement and glances towards their fellow crew mates who seem to all be having the same reaction - hushed whispers and glances in the direction they're all sailing.

Ardatha dismissed making a comment on the missing dragon's that never returned from sea or the splintered hulls of ships that where drug out of the water when they barely made it to port. Natal's own family reassured them, saying nothing could pierce the armored hulls of the very ship they're standing on right now despite the snapped wood and gaping holes on its mirrored partners. Their commanding officer still reads the Waystone with half lidded eyes as the ship crosses into the kelp bed - the tips of each water logged weed caress the underside of the boat.

The boat gently sails in the water for another two hours with their sister ships sailing by their side making up their fleet - seven tanks and five skirmishers as a scout group.

Natal hears their crew-members murmur the tales they all heard when the remaining survivors of those shredded vessels returned and Natal knows that the commander hears and scoffs at them and Natal wrings the broom still in their hands two hours later because they don't know what else to do when everyone on board seems too scared to go below deck.

They look out over the ocean's horizon again.

The sea is calm, the breeze is pleasant, their commanding officer screams out orders, and there's not a storm cloud in the sky when the sea opens her maw and takes them all down below.

Enthius bowed his head, "It seems the naval fleet has returned in...tatters."

Their ruler tilts her head and narrows her eyes. A cold weight settles on Enthius' shoulders as slitted eyes stare back at him and then she speaks, "You where supposed to find the best shark hunters, yes?"

"I did."

"But they failed," and so did you is what that unspoken words say, "While there's no problem going on right now, it's quite annoying to keep having to repair my ships."

He shuffles from foot to foot, "Right, I'll find even better ones."

"I think you've failed me enough."

It's like water gets dumped on him and suddenly he's panicking, pleading, begging, "I- I can do it! I'll find the best- No, I'll hunt down that...nonissue shark," Enthius knows it isn't a shark and knows he can't kill it but a plan is forming, "I'll even take my family."

"Oh?" A glint comes into Ardatha's eye, smoldering anger forgotten, "You'd bet that much on it?"

"Yes, I will," Enthius would not and he will not but she's taken the bait. He's a contractor Ardatha hired in secret after the most recent ship wreckage sunk her jewel's to the bottom of the ocean - his job was to find hunter's up to the task to kill a "shark". Ardatha seems to refuse the idea of anything else besides the vague notion of some shark that they can easily ignore, hunt down, and kill.

Every time Enthius told the hunters of their quarry they laughed and joked about the real issue being Helior not knowing how to avoid storms - they'd still take up the hunt though at the sight up the reward. None of them have returned from sea.

Ever since he was hired to do this job, he has not been allowed to leave. He's unsure why but he has the sneaking suspicion it has to do with royalty image and maintaining the look of independence, something asking for help from a contractor would not allow.

But this? This was his chance. He'd take a ship, grab his family, and they'd skip the sea monster, because Enthius' knows there's no shark, bit altogether. He's been a pain in Ardatha's side and a constant worry in her mind - a regret most likely even acknowledging the creature so she'd want him dead, which is perfectly fine with him since he'll be faking it.

So that's exactly what he does. He grabs his son and parents and they get on the ship that Enthius painstakingly hid extra rations, water, and a map to freedom on. Royal guard's see them off.

Once they hit open waters he immediately switches course and has his son keep an eye out for monarchy ships. Enthius though can't help himself from checking both the horizon for ships and the waters themselves for any sign of...sharks. Any large thud from water against hull is enough to make him jump causing his son to laugh at him.

The island grows smaller and smaller as they sail farther and farther. Each mile the boat takes lets Enthius relax just a bit more. Ardatha can't reach him now and he'll fight no sea monster. The day is pristine as well, not a cloud to see and the ocean is quite calm. His son starts naming out the fish he sees from the rare time he can catch a glimpse of them.

His parents prefer to stay below deck, chattering to themselves. They're quite excited about the prospect of finding a new house to settle in - his dad already rattling off the floor plan for the kitchen.

When the island completely disappears from view Enthius near collapses from relief. The granted far too few stress stricken days planning this trip out are being carried through and all they have to do is settle in until they reach Nygil.

"Hey Dad! A whale!" Enthius looks over to his son who's excitedly pointing at a spot a bit away from them. Just as his eyes feel strained from looking at the ocean there's a spout of water that's shot into the air, signaling a whale. "I wonder if there's a pod!"

So the pair look around. Neither of them have seen whales before, and seeing a whole group of them would be quite a sight to behold. On top of the fact his son might explode from excitement seeing them, so it was worth the eye strain.

There's a large mass following the first so he points it out to his lad, "Second one just behind!" Both of them settle in, waiting for any others to become apparent or for the pair of whales to puff air.

"The second one hasn't used its blowhole."

"I'm sure it's just got a bigger set of lungs on it," but something worms its way into Enthius' heart. Fear. Just as the realization sinks in there's a large commotion in the water. The whale is lifted partially above the surface by a ginormous set of jaws. The water turns red and both men turn stone still.

They sit there as the boat drifts idly in the water, unsure what to do as the creature feeds. It feels like an hour before Enthius stands up slowly and walks over to the mast, turning them against the current that wants to push them towards the beast - the boat being rocked by its movements.

Suddenly there's a rumbling and a kelp covered head is looking directly at them. He's unable to actually see anything besides the rows of teeth in a mouth that's hanging open. A high pitched hiss is released.

"Looks like we'll be fighting that sea monster anyway, huh Pa?"

Tears fill Enthius' eyes and he nods, "Looks like it. Guess it's a bit better than Ardatha, though."

His son laughs and despite himself he laughs too, even as he falls to his knees clutching his son, laughter can be heard until they taste brine and choke on water.
